Nostromo LogsEdit
1.AN INITIAL REPORT (Arthur Dallas) – ”This is Captain Dallas, logging an initial report from the return leg of our Thedus voyage. When we get back home I want a meeting with a shipping coordinator. My usual science officer has been replaced – no reason given. The new guy is more than capable, I’m sure, but only getting two days notice for this kinda thing is crazy. I’d just like an explanation. We’ll be ready for our load when we get the call. Dallas, Nostromo captain, signing off.”

2.SCIENCE OFFICER REPORTING (Ash) – ”Science officer’s initial log. I’ve been installed aboard the Nostromo. All the relevant paperwork has been signed and I have access to the ships MU-TH-UR 6000 mainframe. Captain Dallas and the executive officer seem…Put out by my appearance, but that’s perhaps to be expected. All that’s left is to hope for a productive journey. Ash signing off.”
3.DELAYED PICK-UP (Joan Lambert) – ”This is Lambert confirming the delayed pick-up of the refinery we’re taking back to Earth. I’ve entered initial coordinates for the edge of Epsilon Reticuli using the established haulage route. My next entry will be confirmation of our flightplan to the sol system. Lambert out.”
4.OVERWORKED AND UNDERPAID (Dennis Parker) – ”Ripley’s asked me to log a report on what happened to the umbilicus when we hooked up unto the refinery. I’ll tell you what happened: me and Brett, we’re holding this place together with our bare arms. You’d think millions of tons of ore would get someone from the front deck, someone on a full share, down here with us. Y’know, checkin’ up on the stuff we need. You want to get out of the system on schedule next time? You put the Nostromo in drydock for a month, you wait till we’re done with it, you pay what we’re due. Parker out.”
5.SYSTEM CHECK WENT OKAY (Arthur Dallas) – ”Sounds like the system check went okay. Some ducts still need rerouting but, as I keep getting told, there’s not much we can do about it while the Nostromo is in the air. Parker’s coming up with the sign-off sheets, but I know Ripley wants to chew his ear about the secondary load unit. I’m gonna stay out of it for now, they know what they’re doing. Dallas, Nostromo captain, signing off.”
6.THE SECONDARY LOAD UNIT (Dennis Parker) – ”We’re heading to the edge of the system. Ripley’s given me a list of stuff she says needs doing, says Mother’s not gonna let us hit the gas if we don’t fix the secondary load unit. Helluva lot of work for the routine flight. Dallas, if you somehow found the time in your schedule to listen in on this, Brett and me – we’re working double-time. If you don’t come with a good bonus we’ll be taking it to the union.”
7.FINISHING UP HERE (Samuel Brett) – ”Right. Finishing up here. Kane asked if we could fix it so the heating came on before we get outta the ole freezerinos. Parker said no way – not our job. Next they’ll be asking for monogrammed towels and a massage. So we didn’t do that: We told them that. Brett – over and out.”
8.ANTARCTICA CONTROL WILL GET OUT CALL (Joan Lambert) – ”This is Lambert, navigator on the USCSS Nostromo registering that all navigation beacons and sol system co-ordinates have now been verified by mother. Antarctica traffic control will get our call on October 22nd, or a few hours on either side. Signing off.”
9.HEALTH CHECKS (Ash) – ”Pre-hypersleep health checks have been performed on the entire crew including, after some persistence from the engineer’s staff, the ship’s cat. Everyone regular, present and correct – as set out in the report I’ve just logged with Mother. I have a little more work to do setting up my equipment and initializing systems, but otherwise: we’re ready to go.”
10.NOSTROMO REPORT PACKET (Arthur Dallas) – ”This is Dallas, I’m about to broadcast the Nostromo report packet back to the sol system before we hit the pods. Nearest open relay station looks to be Sevastopol. All things being well – you’ll hear from us once we reach the edge of sol. Don’t miss us too much. Dallas out.”
Archive LogsEdit
Logs 1-20Edit
1.JUST MISSED YOU (Blane, Nov 15th, 2137) – Verlaine, you on the lookout for a navigational officer? I have a friend that’s just lost his ship and he’s looking for work. I can vouch for him, he’s got good papers. Same old story – the megacorps undercut him, picked up all his clients. Contracts are getting harder to come by for the smaller companies and I’m thinking of getting out myself while I still have something to sell. Sounds like you’re doing okay though. Dropped by the docks and heard you just shipped out. Sevastopol Station – what a shithole. Still, I hear Weyland-Yutani pay well. Good luck to you – if you can’t beat them, right? Let’s catch up when you get back. Blane.
2.RE: NOSTROMO INCIDENT (Saul, Nov 13th, 2137) – To N. Taylor RE: Nostromo incident, Weyland-Yutani file #DS9398476 Hey, Taylor, I got your case request. It may take me a while to dig out the files and the incident happened before my time at the company, so I’m a bit fuzzy on the details. In 2122, the Weyland-Yutani cargo vessel the USCSS Nostromo went missing. No trace was found of its cargo or crew. Apart from a new science officer, the rest of the crew had worked together before, seven in all:

Dallas – Captain
Ash – Science officer
Kane (or is it Cain?) – Executive officer.
Ripley – Warrant officer
Lambert – Navigation officer
Parker – Chief engineer
Brett – Engineer technician
Weyland-Yutani lost a lot of money from it, it’s a bit of a black mark in the history. Get the impression they don’t like to mention it. Anyway, I’ll try to find the files later clarify some of the points. If you want I can help you go through them? Maybe some of your luck will rub off on me, I hear upstairs have an eye on you for something big. Saul

Sevastopol StationEdit
4.DECOMMISSIONING (Chief Porter, Oct 7th, 2137) – To engineering team RE: Decommission So boys and girls, you’ve probably heard the whispers about Sevastopol by now and I can confirm it’s official. Sevastopol is being decommissioned. I will go over with each of you what this means in regards to your contracts and next placement, but for now we still have a job to do. The suits want this done with a skeleton crew, which means we’ll only be getting a few outside contractors to help, but it does mean overtime. I recommend taking what you can while it’s available. I should point out that the decommission does not mean ”lucky dip”. Everything here has to be accounted for and I will personally escort anyone found helping themselves to equipment to Marshal Waits. Chief

5.MOVED OUT STASH (Anna, Dec 14th, 2137) – Langley, if you’re looking for our stash, I’ve moved it. You left it right out in the open where anyone could have taken it! Jesus, do you know what I had to do to get it? I’ve hidden it in one of the storerooms – You should be able to find it. The code is 0340. Don’t worry, no-one goes down to the terminal anymore. Not after what happened. Also, we’re out of meds and low on water so you’re going to need to get some – It’s your turn. Maybe it’ll teach you to take care of our stuff in future. Anna
6.GOODBYE FROM SEEGSON (Seegson, Sep 28th, 2137) – Public notice: The decommissioning of Sevastopol Station.

We’ve had a long journey together but sadly it’s coming to an end. Seegson corp would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who worked and lived at Sevastopol over the years, and hopes that Seegson has helped to make it a productive and rewarding environment. Our investment and belief in the station has never wavered. Be assured that Seegson’s APOLLO central A.I and ”Working Joe” androids will be there to serve sevastopol until the last rivet is removed. We wish you all the very best for the future. After all, Sevastopol isn’t just a station. It’s people. Seegson corp
7.KILL THE POWER (Waits, Dec 5th, 2137) – ”Harris? Turner? Get back here now. We have a track, somewhere in engineering. Lock the terminal down, kill the power, and don’t forget your reports. Make them thorough. We’re going to need our paperwork to be bulletproof when this shit is over. Waits out.”
8.TERMINAL RIOT (Julia Jones, Dec 2nd, 2137) – ”Julia Jones. Today’s update. After numerous demands, Marshal Waits finally called a public meeting to address the rumors that have been circulating on Sevastopol. But instead of the answers we wanted, he continued to be evasive and after only a few minutes he and his team were pelted by projectiles from an angry crowd. A gun was fired, there was panic and now Waits and what’s left of his team are forcibly ejecting us from the terminal. Feels like we’re on our own now.”
9.PULLING THE PLUG (Harper, Sep 22nd, 2137) – Zoe, I’m sorry, but I won’t need you to come in next week. As you know, the store’s been in trouble for some time now and I couldn’t hold off the creditors any longer. There’s just no-one coming to Sevastopol anymore. It’s not just us either – it sounds like the whole station is in the red and they’re pulling the plug. Going to sell it off for scrap, I guess. I was speaking to one of the engineers and he reckons they’ll announce it soon. I’m telling you this so you don’t stick around looking for another job. Sevastopol’s finished, time to move on. Harper
10.TO ALL SPACEFLIGHT EMPLOYEES (Waits, Nov 25th, 2137) – To all Spaceflight Terminal employees: in the interest of public safety and the prevention of panic, it must be made clear to all potential passengers that there are currently no scheduled flights leaving Sevastopol, nor ships available. The colonial Marshals are investigating problems on-station and will update accordingly. From the office of Marshal Waits.
11.WHAT IS APOLLO? (Sevastopol information service, Jun, 2115) – What is APOLLO? APOLLO is the central A.I that monitors and provides guidance for all the Seegson ”Working Joes” on Sevastopol. APOLLO also oversees all communications on the station. So wherever you are, you know you’re in safe hands. Seegson, tomorrow, together.
12.LAST POWER COUPLING (Turner, Dec 5th, 2137) – ”Harris? This is Turner. I found the last power coupling. Took me a while, but it’s shut off now. Just fitting the last security brace. Come find me when you’ve shut yours down. Then we can get the hell out of here. Jesus, man…I’m hearing noises everywhere. Every creak and…Just hurry the fuck up, will you?
13.ANOTHER BREAK-IN (Turner, Dec 4th, 2137) – ”Harris? It’s Turner. I had to deal with that wasted asshole again. This time he nearly wrecked the door with a Maintenance Jack. Guess he figures it’s safe here, wants to lock himself in. Screw him. We’ve got too much to worry about without babysitting drunks. Anyway, I threw him in the evidence lock-up. Let the son of a bitch sleep it off.
14.DEAD SOLDIERS (Zach Watson, Dec 8th, 2137) – ”Hello? I wanna make a complaint. To the…The highest authority, okay? My name is Zachary Watson. That’s Watson, you get that? My complaint is this: the fucking Marshals. They should be protecting us, it’s their job! Something’s on the station with us and no one knows what it is, no one fucking knows! They put braces on the doors – lockdown. You know, like to keep something out! I’m fucking terrified, man. I’m fucking…Shit, it’s so cold. I don’t think this fucking thing even works.”
15.INTERVIEW: HEYST (Waits, Nov 28th, 2137) – ”Interview subject: Heyst. Did I say that right? – Heyst? Look, if you can’t even tell me your name we’re going to be here a hell of a long time. I just want to know about your boss. He’s got you into a lot of trouble. Someone’s got to be accountable. I’m gonna make damn sure someone’s accountable. No? Tough guy, eh? Turner, turn off the tape. Maybe our friend here is just shy.”
16.A BLIND EYE (Bailey, Oct 19th, 2137) – S – I managed to get my hands on that stuff I was talking about. Chief won’t even notice the stock missing; things always get lost when a station’s closing down. Don’t worry about customers either, Sinclair’s told his men to turn a blind eye. They’d probably be too busy goofing off or taking backhanders to notice anyway – You get what you pay for, I guess. Bailey.
17.TWO-MAN RULE (Joe, Dec 8th, 2137) – Nearson, Leonard, you’re both first shift on the door so read carefully. Putting this together wasn’t easy and we don’t want intruders getting in because you didn’t read the instructions properly. This here is what you call a two-man rule lock. This means it needs two to open the door simultaneously from two different consoles. Most of us don’t know each other, so this is the safest way of making sure everything stays secure and none of us decide to head off on their own with our stuff. When you’re on shift, take it in turns to keep guard and notify the other if one of us needs to be let in or out. That means just us, no-one else. No matter how much anyone begs and no matter what sob story they try and pull. I was with a group before and we got soft and now i’m the only one left. Trust no-one.
18.INVENTORY (Jenkins, Dec 9th, 2137) – Without talking to me first!!!

Aspirin – X4
Canned food – 32
Cereals – 6 boxes
Water – 4 gallons
Toothpaste – 12 tubes
Cigarettes – 3 cartons
Toilet paper – 26 rolls
Industrial tape – 6 rolls
Med kits – 2
Powdered milk – X 52
Notes: Running low on ammunition. Zoe managed to pick up some prescription drugs, all addressed to the same person. Guess they didn’t need them anymore.

19.LEAVE WORK NOW (Hughes, Dec 1st, 2137) – ”Marie, listen to me very carefully. I want you to leave work now, collect Claire, pick up the cat and head home. We need to find someplace safe until Seegson send a ship. I saw the guy from down the hall – can’t remember his name, the one in the dirty baseball cap, weird smell – he had something in his coat, I think it was a gun. He just looked right through me. Don’t talk to anyone. Don’t tell them where you’re going. I’ll meet you as soon as I can.
20.ARCHIVES (Franco, Oct 16th, 2137) – To W. ‘Chief’ Porter. RE: Sevastopol terminals

Chief, the good news is that i’m about 80% through archiving Sevastopol’s internal mail system for the decommissioning. It’s been disconnected from APOLLO but I’ve left the basic messaging system in place for the people still here. The bad news is whoever set it up in the first place skimped on the hardware and we’ve had some leaks. I’ve got Mike Tanaka looking into it now – he’s the specialist archivist we called in, seems to know his shit. Just thought I better give you the heads up in the meantime. Franco

Logs 21-40Edit
21.AN OUTPOST OF PROGRESS? #1 (Julia Jones, Sep 6th, 2137) – Sevastopol: an outpost of progress? By Julia Jones
Desolation through Isolation

The space station that nobody needed, run by a company we all forgot. Sevastopol is now a backwater. The population is a tenth of the station’s optimal capacity. Docking bays are empty and the shutters are down on local stores and businesses. The orders for Seegson’s cheaply manufactured androids have long since dried up, and the antiquated APOLLO governing AI system frequently malfunctions. How did we get here and, more importantly, where have billions of dollars of investment gone? My name is Julia Jones. I have lived on Sevastopol for two months compiling this report for The Colonial Times, discovering the price our second-tier corporations have paid for their over-expansion during the race into the Outer Rim.
22.EMPTY BOX (Chief Porter, Nov 29th, 2137) – ”Message for Marshal Waits. This is Chief Porter in Tech Support. Look, there’s nothing on this flight recorder, Waits. We’ve broken God knows how many corporate confidentiality agreements and come up with zip – nothing except the Weyland-Yutani logo and an empty read-out. Now, these things are built to last, so either someone on board ”the Nostromo” asked its mother core to wipe it clean, or somehow the data’s been corrupted before it got here. Care to fill me in on why this was a priority job?
23.DOOR OVERRIDE (Chief, Dec 1st, 2137) – Hughes, I’ve put a manual lock on the door leading upstairs. Don’t want any accidents until we figure what’s going on here. Chief
24.OUR MANIFESTO (Seegson, Feb, 2115) – (First published in ”eye on Seegson”, Feb 2115)

We don’t want to show you a new world. We want to discover it with you. Here at Seegson, every new technology, research project and discovery is driven to find real world applications to help you. We hope you’ll join us for the journey.
25.TOMORROW, TOGETHER’ #1 (Sebastian Sieg, Mar, 2115) – Together tomorrow: Seegson’s journey into colonial space an official history, by Sebastian Sieg (first printed in ”eye of Seegson”) Our origins in space

2034 changed everything. The advent of faster than light travel. Put Seegson (then known as Sieg and Son) on the path to success. The race into space began in earnest and, under the steady hand of our founder Josiah Sieg, our company was primed and ready for the years that followed. Sieg and Son built the components that enabled ships to extend colonial space beyond the sol system. As history relates, Weyland Corp was reluctant to share it’s FTL technologies with other corporations. Fortunately, Josiah Sieg was on hand to speculate, innovate and produce. Without Sieg and Son, the skies would have looked very different indeed!
26.PLEASE UNDERSTAND (Hughes, Dec 11th, 2137) – ”Marie, if you get this, i’m making my way to Seegson communications now. I didn’t wake you because I knew you’d try to stop me. Please understand, this is our best shot. Someone’s got to re-establish communications. We need to make sure the officials back at home know what’s going on here. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be back. I’m not going to leave you and Claire alone.”
27.CALL LOG AM (APOLLO, Nov 27th, 2137) – Call ID: 128451386 What’s going on up there? I’ve been waiting for a call and… APOLLO Please stand by. Your call is being rerouted.

Call ID: 128451400 Hello? My Working Joe is acting strangely. It won’t listen to anything I… APOLLO Please stand by. Your call is being rerouted.

Call ID: 128451417 I need help! I’m trapped in my apartment! There’s an android outside and… APOLLO Please stand by. Your call is being rerouted.
28.CALL LOG PM (APOLLO, Nov 27th, 2137) – Call ID: 128451464 Put me through to the Marshal’s office! It’s an emergency! Someone’s robbing my store. I… APOLLO Please stand by. Your call is being rerouted.

Call ID: 128451470 He’s gone! It…It k…Killed him! I think it’s still here… APOLLO Please stand by. Your call is being rerouted.
29.YOUR LOGGED MESSAGE (APOLLO datasearch, Nov 25th, 2137) – Sensitive corporate information has been automatically detected in a sevastolink message recently sent from this terminal. This event has been logged by APOLLO on behalf of Seegson. If you have any further questions please talk to your line manager or your nearest synthetic Seegson representative.
30.APOLLO’S EYE (Ransome, Jun 14th, 2135) – Riggs, are you still working down in Seegson communications? Remember that trouble you got into last year? The trouble I helped you out of? Well, it’s time to repay the favor. One of my colleagues has been looking into some of the import documents and found a few problems. He’s new, so he doesn’t understand how we do things on Sevastopol. And he’s threatening to go to Waits about it. This could hurt us all, so I need you to keep an eye on him, see if anything interesting comes up. APOLLO has cameras everywhere, it just needs someone to tell it where to point to. His name is Daniel. Haldin, lives in Josiah Sigg executive APTS. 651 If this goes well, I might have some more work for you. We could clean up here. Ransome
31.TORRENS HAIL (Verlaine, Dec 11th, 2137) – ”This is the commercial vessel Torrens out of saint clair, registration number MSV-7760, calling Sevastopol traffic control. We’re carrying three passengers on a Weyland-Yutani bond. You’re holding the Nostromo flight recorder unit. We request immediate permission to transfer the passengers port-side. Over.”

32.TORRENS DAMAGE (Verlaine, Dec 11th, 2137) – ”This is Verlaine on the Torrens. What the hell just happened? Sevastopol? Did any of our EVA team make it on board? Please response. We’ve taken damage in the explosion and are pulling out of Sevastopol space. Systems will be down while we repair. I can’t say for how long…”
33.RE:TORRENS HAIL (Waits, Dec 11th, 2137) – ”This is Waits, colonial marshal at Sevastopol station. We have a serious situation here. Non-local comms are down and we need you to send out an emergency message, do you read me? Repeat, our ranged communications are down and we need help. Stand off and send help.”
34.RECEIPT OF TRANSMISSION (Taylor, Nov 12th, 2137) – ”Sevastopol, this is Weyland-Yutani executive administrator Nina Taylor, confirming receipt of your transmission. I am a member of the team assigned to collect the Nostromo flight recorder. The black box in your possession is of primary importance to Weyland-Yutani. Under existing corporate agreements we should remind you that you must not attempt to read its contents, nor disclose its presence to any third parties. We will be with you soon. A private message for Marshal Waits will follow.
35.LOW ON MEDS (Morley, Oct 7th, 2137) Dr. Lingard, we need more supplies of mood stimulants up here. We’re getting really low, and it doesn’t help that Kuhlman seems to be handing them out like candy. Logs show he’s been to the dispensary sixteen times this week. We need to start rationing medication. Sevastopol’s people are only going to need these more and more the closer we get to shutdown. Can you talk to Kuhlman? Find out where these prescriptions are going?
36.HOSPITAL QUARANTINE (Lingard, Nov 23th, 2137) – For senior management eyes only San Cristobal Medical Facility quarantine: active. Entrance to primary care deck now limited to Marhsals and senior staff. Universal facility pass code: 1702 Systems will scan for potential quarantine breaches every fifteen (15) minutes.
37.AN OUTPOST OF PROGRESS? #3 (Julia Jones, Sep 12th, 2137) – Sevastopol: An out post of progress? By Julia Jones

A troubled population

For better or worse, the right to bear arms followed us into colonial space. Alone, vulnerable and light years from law enforcement, who could deny our voyagers a way to defend themselves, their ships and their families? The flip-side of this argument is Sevastopol, where gun crime is rampant. Endlessly turning circles in a neglected corner of space, it’s people are downbeat and disconsolate. Those who could afford to leave did so years ago, abandoning friends and neighbors among empty stores, creaking systems and the forgotten dreams of the deep economic boom. Sevastopol’s people feel deceived – Tempted here by corporations that refused to recognize the deep space bubble was about to burst. They are angry, desperate and increasingly divided. Recent colonial marshal clamp-downs on the black market have increased resentment. Every day it feels as if the station has edged a little close to free-fall.
38.LEFT OUT OF THE LOOP (Kuhlman, Oct 8th, 2137) – ”I do not take kindly to being left out of the loop, Morley. You hear me? I tried to use the dispensary today and found I was locked out. I can’t possibly be expected to carry out my duties if you and Lingard cut my access privileges. I have patients that we relapse without that medication, particularly when things on the station are so precarious. I will not see patient care suffer. Consider this a formal warning. And, for the record, I do not have a problem. Kuhlman out.
39.RE: RECOVERY ROOMS (Morley, Oct 5th 2137) – I just found a patient who’s been locked in a recovery room for days listening to that godawful bullshit about pretty sunrises and a wife back home frying bacon. We have been requested to vacate the premises in readiness for the decommission but we have not been given leave to abandon our duty of care. Don’t let this happen again.
40.MEDICAL RECORD 1 (Morley, Sep 23rd, 2137) – Green, J Doctor Morley attending.

Anxiety disorder. Fractured tibia. Suspected internal bruising. Patient edgy. Responds well to the little personal interaction I have time for. Our chess games are a welcome break for us both. Minimal care. No insurance.
Logs 41-60Edit
41.PREP THE PATIENTS (Waits, Oct 6th, 2137) – ”Dr.Morley, this is Marshal Waits. Make sure all your patients are prepped for the decommission. That means full documentation, personal effect, and any meds they’ll need during the journey. I’m scheduling shuttles to transfer them to the medical ship for transportaion. I strongly recommend placing the more volatile patients into early hypersleep prior to transfer. I don’t want to hear your complaints. I don’t have the manpower to guarantee protection for everyone if any of them decide to kick off. Pharms or hypersleep, I don’t care. Just get them subdued. That’s just the way it’s got to be. Waits out.”

42.URGENT: MARSHAL INVESTIGATION (Lingard, Nov 14th 2137) – Frank. I need to talk to you. I’ve got a body up here that’s part of a marshal investigation – female, late thirties, chest wound. I have no idea how long Marshal Waits will want to keep her up here, but this is a highly sensitive situation. I am going to need your discretion, and I’ll also need you to trust me on this one. Come see me in my office. Lingard, senior medical officer
43.ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS (Lingard, Nov 16th, 2137) – Frank, your concern about San Cristobal’s lockdown has been noted, but I assure you an evacuation is 100% necessary and only a temporary measure. My priority is the welfare of the living, while you seem to be more preoccupied with the dead. If you’re worried about power fluctuations, Morgue temperature and the condition of the corpses just adjust the coolant delivery system. Just get out there ASAP. Lingard.
44.DISPENSARY IS EMPTY (Morley, Nov 15th, 2137) – Message for Lingard on return. I’ve prepped the patients in the trauma ward for transportation, as best I can, before Waits locks the place down. I’m going upstairs to the psychiatric ward to make sure there are no stragglers. The dispensary is now empty. Everything San Cristobal has to offer in terms of first aid and medicine is with you, or elsewhere on-station. I’m hoping you’ll bring back good news. Morley
45.COLONIAL MARSHAL DIRECTIVE (Marshal Waits, Nov 16th, 2137) – Dr. Morley, I don’t care what you think you need to do. I want you out of San Cristobal now. You know what we’ve set up in there, and I’m truly sorry for what it means for the patients who can’t be moved, but this is the only way. There will be no further warnings. Marshal Waits
46.MORLEY: UPDATES AND CODES (Lingard, Nov 18th, 2137) – Morley, I need you out of medical. We’ve set up shop in the habitation tower. People are fighting over supplies. We’ve got more injuries coming in than we have the meds to deal with them, and my team is depleted to say the least. I don’t know how you’ll break the lockdown. but if you need to access San Crisobal’s central wards I left a keycard in the security locker. The code is 2505 Lingard
47.SAN CRISTOBAL LOCKDOWN (Marshal Waits, Nov 16th, 2137) – San Cristobal medical has been locked down by the colonials marshals until further notice. Sevastopol’s medical team are setting up field hospitals throughout Sevastopol to deal with the ongoing crisis. Locations to follow. Marshal Waits
48.AN OLD FRIEND (Ransome, Nov 12th, 2137) – ”Dr. Lingard, this is Ransome. Remember me? Your friendly chief executive? Lingard, you don’t drop by, you don’t call. Aren’t we palls any more? Oh well, we’re both busy people…And after all, I have lots of other friends. Some of them have badges. One of them told me you called Marshal Waits about a…Shall we say…Interesting find? I want in. No arguments. After all, how much does Waits really know about you? Not as much as your old friend here. And I bet he wouldn’t be as understanding about black market med supplies. I look forward to your call, doc.”
49.AUTOPSY REPORT (Lingard, Nov 14th, 2137) – Name: Foster, Catherine Coroner’s case# 11/14/2137 D/O/B: 01/20/2098

Age: 39 Sex: Female Origin: Crew member of the Anesidora

Body identified by: Marlow, H – Anesidora captain

Case # 001794-26B-2137 Investigative agency: Sevastopol colonial marshal authority

50.TAPE OF THE SCENE (Waits, Nov 13th, 2137) – ”Turner, we’ve had something go down here in San Cristobal. Tape off the scene and make sure it’s not touched until Garcia comes in with forensics. Keep this quiet for now. I want total silence. Last thing this station needs is a panic. And one other thing – If I find out who leaked this to Ransome, I’ll make them eat their fucking badge. He turned up, quoted Seegson privileges, and had a ringside seat for the whole god damn mess. This is a serious incident. I don’t need Ransome making it more complicated. Waits out.”
51.HUMAN TOUCH (Barker, Nov 8th, 2137) – This is by way of a formal complaint to station medical. I do not want to be attended by an android…Any android. I am a senior seegson executive with a significant financial investment in Sevastopol. I should be treated appropriately, by which I mean, by humans only.
52.DUTY ROSTER (Lingard, Sep 9th, 2137) – Duty roster 09/09/2137 Lingard, senior medical consultant Morley, general medical practitioner Khulman, general medical practitioner West, radiologist Fernadez, dental surgeon
53.MEDICAL RECORD 2 (Lingard, Sep 23rd, 2137) – Paul, B. Doctor Lingard attending. Severe chemical burns to arms and legs.
54.MEDICAL RECORD 3 (Kuhlman, Sep 23rd, 2137) – Wright, I. Doctor Kuhlman attending. Suspected brain damage caused by asphyxiation through manual strangulation. Nothing to do. Wasted bed.
55.THE INCIDENT (Lingard, Nov 14th, 2137) – ”Morley, it’s Lingard. After the incident the marshals want us to rope off medical. They’re bringing in a team to find whatever it was the patient was carrying. I told them it was fast, but they’re convinced they can trap it. They’ve got nets. I’ll set up a temporary medical center outside. You’re in charge for now. Don’t let Kuhlman sweet-talk his way in. The last thing we need is him ”self medicating” with Marshal Waits around.”
56.WY ARE YEARS AHEAD (Smythe, Sep 11th, 2137) – Report, Smythe, head of synthetic development. I just received schematics for the 120-A/8. I don’t know how much we paid our mole, but the Seegson board is gonna need to shell out a hell of a lot more. I know this seems old tech for WY, but it’s beyond anything we’re capable of. Our key executives and shareholders won’t listen, but we need investment. The company and all it’s subsidiaries are light years ahead of us.
57.YOUR REPORT (Ransome, Sep 11th, 2137) – ”Smythe, I’ve been looking over your report on the Weyland-Yutani androids and your proposals for improving the Working Joes. Now, I appreciate the work you put in, but understand we live in different worlds. Yours is full of extrapolations and estimations. Mine has an executive suite and eight thousand dollar suits. Bottom line is: I’ve got to look after the money, buddy! I hired you because you were the cheapest, not the best. Find a way to bring these costs down huh? Ransome out.
58.WORKING JOE SPIEL (Smythe, Sep 16th, 2137) – Russel, Here’s my spiel for the potential clients today. What do you think? Spedding will hang me out to dry if they don’t bite. ‘Welcome gentlemen! Welcome, to the buzzing heart of the ‘Sevastopol Synthetic Solution’. Next up on your tour will be the Systech Spire and the APOLLO core itself, but first – an example of android self-governance. When APOLLO’S synthetics require a little more care than the repair wards can provide – they come here. We believe this is the first roll-out of fully automated synthetic-to-synthetic medical intervention. No human expertise required. No costly human surgical training. All data is streamed directly from APOLLO, and every incision recorded in it’s logs. This is the future, gentlemen. Tomorrow, together!’
59.STORAGE INVENTORY (Smythe, Sep 15th, 2137) – Russel, upstairs want a full run-down on what we’ve got stacked in components storage. There’s some useful stuff in there, some junk. They want value estimates too. Smythe.
60.TOMORROW,TOGETHER #2 (Sebastian Sieg, Apr, 2115) – Together tomorrow: Seegson’s journey into colonial space an official history, by Sebastian Sieg. (First printed in ‘eye on Seegson’)

Our remarkable growth. Sieg and Son proved to be the backbone of colonial FTL expansion, providing reliable components that could carry humanity deep into space. In so doing it grew, and by 2066 was running vast manufacture plants in London, buenos aires, nagasaki and the lunar schickard-wargentin frontier.

By 2071, the year the Sieg family sold it’s shares back into the company, it’s expansion remained exponential. Single-minded rivals looked on with envy as Sieg and Song became market leaders manuufacturing cars, chemicals, educational equipment and building materials.

Towards the end of the last century, came a move that would forge our shared future. Sieg and Song became Seegson. We took on the name our customers had us by for decades, and we turned to face tomorrow together, among the stars.

Logs 61-80Edit
61.VIP VISIT (Spedding, Sep 16th, 2137) – ”Smythe, have you been practicing the script for the VIPs visiting today? We need to impress. Noise from upstairs says they’re the last potential bidders for Sevastopol’s Working Joe roll-out. If they go with Weyland-Yutani cast offs instead, the jobs Seegson have allocated for us back on Earth are on the line. Don’t screw up. Spedding out.”

62.REQUISITIONS ANDROID (Smythe, Sep 17th, 2137) – Spedding. Now you’ve fired me you’ll have to descend from your ivory tower to pick up the slack. The guys decommissioning Sevastopol have free access to supplies and storage, but everything will need logging – so use the requisitions android. Power him up. Let him out of his box, and watch him go – just like me huh? By the time you get this I’ll be dead drunk in Gillen’s bar. I guess you already know this, but it’s been pure hell working for you. This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Smythe.
63.ELEVATOR OUT (Chief, Nov 15th, 2137) – I just got another message from Spedding about the busted elevator outside the Android examination theater. My guys have got a million things to do right now, so it’s not going to be fixed in time for your VIP visit. If Spedding wants to be a priority then maybe he should stop being a petulant asshole. It’s an easy job. Off the top of my head I can tell you the parts that you need are in components storage – Row 1, stack B. If you can’t find it yourself, ask the requisitions android. Just get off my back. Chief
64.SYNTHETIC ENGINEER REQUEST (Fernandez, Nov 14th, 2137) – Can I get someone from Seegson Synthetics to look at my android? I’ve just worked a twenty four hour shift helping out with trauma patients and I’m the dentist! Waits wants every one of them moved out of the hospital and no-one is telling me anything. If I’m going to be fulling down these kinds of hours I need some extra help. We’ve got a requisitions android down here with perfectly adequate programming but he’s been gathering dust because apparently the same model started acting up on the other side of the station. What the hell is going on with this place? Get someone down here now, before I make an official complaint.
65.LAST BIDDERS (Spedding, Sep 17th, 2137) – ”Smythe, it’s Spedding. You knew full well that these guys were the last bidders for Sevastopol’s APOLLO system, and you totally fucked the android presentation. They’re not interested. So no bonus for me, no half-share for you, and God only knows what it means for the suits upstairs. That’s got me pissed. But do you know what’s got me even more pissed? I have to stay on Sevastopol to oversee the synthetic shut-down while you go home. Don’t have nightmares on the trip back, jackass.”
66.CUTTING TIES (Sinclair, Dec 2nd, 2137) – ”This is a message for all members of the Seegson Security team. There’s been an altercation in the Spaceflight Terminal. Waits doesn’t have our back. As of right now no-one hired as Seegson Security is going on-shift. We’re cutting ties with the Marshals and everyone else on-station. It’s time to take care of our own. I’m going to find someplace safe for everyone to hole up. Money’s dried up here. We don’t owe these people nothing.”
67.RESTART TRANSIT (Nash, Dec 11th, 2137) – Listen you crazy bastard, you think that thing get’s around in a fucking transit car? You’re sitting on an override that’ll disconnect the transit from APOLLO, so fucking pull it! You can stop all this bullshit just by pulling a lever. You think you’re safer with the transit powered down, but we’re trapped like rats. For God’s sake help us!
68.DOUBLE CROSSED (Cooper, Dec 7th, 2137) – Got a heads up for you, jackass. Don’t even think about throwing in with Sinclair and the Seegson Security guys. I told them it was you that killed Morrison, if they see you, they’ll shoot on sight. You should’ve let me join in your bolt-hole. You won’t last a week.
69.WE NEED SUPPLIES (Sinclair, Dec 9th, 2137) – ”Guys it’s Sinclair. We need supplies. Take what you can from whoever you want. I found an area in habitation where we can seal ourselves in and wait for rescue. I’ve got guys wielding vents and shutting off elevators. The plan is to make it watertight. There’s no room for more people in the sanctuary, but we can make space for food, meds, water and guns. If we’re going to get through this alive there’s no room for pity.”
70.FIRST TRAP GONE (Ricardo, Dec 11th, 2137) – Waits. We’re a trap down. The creature set off explosives we set in the Habitation Tower, and I’m hearing reports of damage to the Spaceflight Terminal docks. I don’t think we put a dent in it. There’s activity in San Cristobal, so maybe it’s gone back. Find a way over to the Scimed tower transit. Hope to God the sensors in medical reception are still online.
71.ARREST SHEETS (Turner, Nov 19th, 2137) – 11/13/2137 Cell 2 Marlow, Henry Crime number: #— (——) Status: Indefinite incarceration.

11/18/2137 Cell 1 Tanaka, Mike Crime number #342 (drunk and disorderly) Status: Night in the cells to sober up. Let off with a warning.

12/02/2137 Cell 3 Webster, Robert Crime number #343 (domestic incident) Status: Released due to on-station security breach
72.REMOVAL OF TRANSIT (W. ”Chief” Porter, Oct 9th, 2137) – ”Chief here. As requested, I’ve resubmitted my report for the removal of the transit system for use elsewhere once Sevastopol’s been closed off. I still don’t see how it’s possible. I know Seegson is trying recoup as much investment as it can on this place, but the thing is trashed. Junctions have rusted through, major safety protocols have been ignored for years…It’s a wreck. Nothing short of a miracle has stopped it killing off half the population.
73.POINTLESS REQUESTS (Chief, Oct 5th, 2137) – These people have been told Sevastopol’s due for the scrap heap, right? I just got this message from Ellison in Seegson accounts. ”Can we fix the hand-drier in the rest room”. Can we hell. Next time one of these bullshit requests come through, send them right back. We’re about to strip this place out, not patch it up.
74.HARDWARE PROBLEMS (Patterson, Nov 25th, 2137) – Service request: Ref #SR6684 Category: Hardware problems Title: ”Not receiving messages”

Details: Expecting an order from off-station that should have arrived by now. I usually get several a week, but there’s nothing. Can someone check my comms unit? Can’t afford to lose the business.

Created: 11.09.37 User: Martin Patterson Notes: Engineer sent out 11.25.37 Equipment seems to be functioning. Flag up with Seegson comms. See if something’s slipped through APOLLO’S net.
75.AN OUTPOST OF PROGRESS? #4 (Julia Jones, Sep 14th, 2137) – Sevastopol: An outpost of progress? By Julia Jones

An uncertain future

Seegson has now cut its losses and is set to abandon Sevastopol. This is yet another sign of retrenchment that is rife throughout the sector. Some days it has felt as if corporate pride was the only thing keeping this troubled station in orbit above KG-348. Living aboard this station today, it’s abundantly clear that Seegson has gambled widly with both its own investment and that of banking corps such as geofund investor. The ill-judged rush into space colonization, its hubris and its over-expansion, have cost our second tier corporations dearly. Weyland-Yutani, with its extensive financial and technological firepower, can weather these storms while its lesser rivals fall away. Even the company, however, must hear alarm bells ringing as it looks towards these fading orbital outposts. WY’s ongoing investment in terraforming research technology looks increasingly shrewd, as it watches each of these distant lights blink out…
76.I CAN’T TELL WHO ESCAPED (Winters, Dec 9th, 2137) – ”I am recording this for anyone else who was away when it happened. I can’t tell who escaped, there are some bodies but…The others were taken through the vents. One by one. The doors were locked, but the ceiling vents were open. There was nowhere to run, and no-one to let them out. It was ;ole a fox dropping into a henhouse. You and I – we have two options: there’s a camp of survivors who still trust the Marshals in the mall, and then there’s Sinclair and his idiot men with guns somewhere in Habitation. I doubt either will last a week.
77.TAKEN (Rosco, Dec 8th, 2137) – It took her and I couldn’t do a thing stop it. First it tore through Doug. Then it cut Liam in half and threw him aside like a rag doll. Then it cornered Emma. I was in the shadows and it didn’t see me. Emma was calling for mew – calling for help, bu I couldn’t move. I was too scared. I let it take her, but i’m going to find her. If you find this, arm yourself.
78.SCAVENGING (Lincoln, Dec 4th, 2137) – Eric? Can you hear? Eric? Damn comms are screwed again. You there? Eric, it’s Lincoln. Can you hear me? I made it down to tech support. I’ve picked up some canisters of water, and some battery packs. Oh, and some tools too. A lot of stuff has already been looted. I’m going to try and break into the lock-up. I think they keep security hackers in there. We could use one. But i’m not going to stay down here much longer. There’s something…God, I dunno. It’s scary as crap down here. I want to get back to freight. Call me if you get this. Okay? Okay?
79.SECURITY SHUTTERS (Thompson, Dec 7th, 2137) – To the camp group: we can’t keep up a full guard 24/7, but with the volunteers look-outs and the spire’s existing security systems we can keep it watertight. From this point onward, we don’t raise the security shutters for anyone and all supply runs have to go through through me. We can get through this guys. Thompson.
80.THE CAMP (Bertram, Dec 7th, 2137) – Don’t know how much longer I can take this. It’s cramped and dirty and the trash is starting to rot. I don’t even know if we’re really safe here. Carter and Thompson came back from their recons last week with a couple of guns, and i’m starting to see a different side to some of the people here. Maybe that women, Winters, was right.
Logs 81-100Edit
81.A WARNING (Waits, Dec 10th, 2137) – Sinclair, I have verified reports that you and your men are shooting civilians and looting supplies. When I find a way to kill this creature, I hope to hell that it found you first. Waits

82.TRUCE (Waits, Dec 5th, 2137) – Sinclair, I know we’ve had our differences since you and your Seegson security team arrived on Sevastopol, but right now we have a severe situation. We need a united front. In return for your total cooperation I am willing to drop my investigation into your involvement in unregistered black market trading and drop all claims I had on the systech spire Marshal office where you and your thugs operate from. Let’s do this right. Marshal Waits
83.HACKED (Mike Tanaka, Oct, 24th, 2137) – Franco, I’ve been investigating those archive leaks and I’m pretty sure it’s just faulty hardware. These arious systems are too old to properly integrate into something as complex as APOLLO. I found something else out though – it looks like someone has been accessing people’s private messages and camera feeds for the last couple of years. The executive suites, San Cristobal, even the Marshal Bureau have been hacked. Does the name Ransome mean anything to you?
84.TRANSMISSION (Ransome, Nov, 24th, 2137) – ”Hughes, it’s Ransome – I just got your query. Yes, I have been in our transmission relay archive and I’ve done some decrypting. I’m looking for crew logs that passed through Sevastopol a while ago. I know you’re concerned, but it’s ancient history. It’s just some stuff I need to know: a routine Company transmission packet sent from the edge of Thedus before a ship started its trip home. Nothing that’s gonna break anything. Still, no-one else needs to know about it, right? If you talk – well, there’ll be consequences. I mean, there’s plenty Marie doesn’t know, right? Leave them decoding and let me know when they’re done. We can keep this civil.”
85.FOLDER CODE (Walsh, Dec 3rd, 2137) – Personal message: code is 7789
86.SURPLUS TO REQUIREMENTS (Hunter, Mar 20th, 2136) – RE: Power budgets The distribution department is surplus to requirements and will be decommissioned shortly. We will be reducing the power budget to the area in due course as it is required for a corporate function. Any questions should be directed to your line manager. Regards, G. Hunter.
87.SEEGSON FUNDING (Seegson investment board, Feb 17th, 2136) – Seegson regrets to inform that Gemini exoplanet solutions will recieve no further funding. Seegson is not liable for time remaining on Gemini personnel contracts. Please talk to your line manager about the facility shutdown and what it will mean for you. We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for the time you spent with us.
88.MAINTENANCE SYSTEMS (Hunter, Mar 1st, 2137) – RE: power budgets After a discussion with the line manager, several of you have questions about restoring power. Should power be required in distrubtion, say in case of an emergency, you can access the maintenance systems using keycode 8897 Note: this still needs to be cleared with your nine manager and should not be done without authorization.
89.WHAT IS KG348 (Seegson information service, May, 2115) – What is KG348? KG348 is a jovian gas giant, situated at a mean distance of 6.2 astronomical units from the heart of the system. Initial surveys of its cloud layers show a rare mix of metallic gas. To exploit potential of this resource, we are proud to announce the KG348 project, spearheaded by Gemini Exoplanet Solutions.
90.GEMINI EXOPLANET SOLUTIONS MANIFESTO (Gemini Exoplanet Solutions, Aug, 2115) – Gemini Exoplanet Solutions. Be bold. Learn. Adapt. Live. Life is change. We grow by adapting and evolving to meet each new challenge. At Gemini Exoplanet Solutions we take mother nature’s blueprint as our starting point by breaking new ground, and by finding new applications for existing technologies. Fuel resources become building materials. Weapon developments advance agricultural growth. Space exploration is applied to surgical procedures. Look around. You never know what might be useful. (Sponsored by Seegson investment board)
91.SIT TIGHT (Unknown member, Feb 3rd, 2136) – S – We’re going to have to find a new way to get the goods into Sevastopol. Waits has commercial cargo under scrutiny at the moment and he’s checking the ambulance shuttles. Tell your man outside to sit tight for now, I know a guy called Sinclair who could help us. I remember when the Marshals actually had to deal with real crime rather than harassing businessmen and screwing with their deals. – T
92.SAMPLES (Ransome, Nov 16th, 2137) – ”Seegson executive Ransome here. I’m sending over some samples for investigation. I want the minimum number of employees on this. Keep it on the down-low and report only to me. If any of this gets out, i’ll make sure your career dies with Sevastopol. There are a lot of inconsistencies in Gemini’s ledgers. Do right by me and i’ll remember you. Whatever you’re skimming now will seem like chicken feed. Do the smart thing.”
93.CLARKE IS DEAD (Elaine, Dec 7th, 2137) – Jameson, Clarke is dead. Last time I saw him he was using some of the junk around the station to make explosives for protection. I told him to be careful, but when I got back from gathering supplies there was just explosive damage and blood. I’m on my own now, so i’m going to come to you. Where are you? Elaine.
94.GEMINI SHUTDOWN (Hunter, Oct 11th, 2137) – Ladies and gentlemen, I appreciate many of you are upset with the current situation and the imminent total shutdown of Gemini. I have been asked by Seegson to assure you that the future of Sevastopol itself is 100% secure. Early negotiations with interested corporate buyers have begun in earnest. In the mean-time, before you leave, please deposit all Seegson-owned equipment in the security locker. The code is 2743. We have made a full inventory, and the Marshals will be informed if anything goes missing.
95.NO FUTURE (Julia Jones, Dec 7th, 2137) – ”I don’t know when anyone will get this, but someone needs to keep a record and I don’t know…I came here a few months ago to write about the collapse of a dream, a future gone sour. For me, the people here were little more than footnotes for my article: something to tug at the heartstrings. And when the disappearances started, oh, I was thrilled. This was something big. But now people are afraid and a communications fault means we’re alone. I’m trapped here, just like everybody else. Another footnote. Another victim.”
96.WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS? (Gillen, Oct 4th, 2137) – Hey, Mart. I guess you’ve heard about the station decommission by now. What are your plans? I’ve got some connections that can hook me up with work when we leave – I can’t promise anything, but maybe they can find you something too. They’ve started closing down the stores in the galleria. Your place was still boarded up from last year. Sorry you had to lose it, you never seemed to catch a break. Do you still hear from Margaret and the kids? Maybe you should go see them when you leave Sevastopol. Let me know if you want me to ask around for you. Gillen.
97.SECURITY RISK (Joseph, Dec 8th, 2137) – Blyth, we need to find a way to shut down these automated janitors. They’re a security problem – every time they start their cleaning circuit there’s a risk they’ll open up a route for that thing that’s hunting us. Or at the very least, let the looters in.
98.TO ALL SEVASTOPOL INHABITANTS (Geofund investor, Oct 1st, 2137) – The station’s decommission process is now underway. Please read carefully and take note:

An initial team is on-station to survey Sevastopol and initialize the decommissioning process. Please help them in any way you can.
We have enough food and medical supplies. The redirection of the supply ship flight path will not impact on your quality of life. Rationing will, however, be deemed necessary if stocks run low.
Hoarding and illegal trading will not be tolerated. Please report suspicious activity to Seegson Security, who will investigate in cooperation with the Colonial Marshals.
A population re-homing service has been established. We are happy to help you with your next step, but are not liable for costs incurred. If you require financial support we recommend Seegson credit services.
The decommission is final. You must relocate, or you will be faced with forced removal.

99.PEOPLE ARE SCARED (Winters, Dec 10th, 2137) – ”I have been camped out in galleria mall for maybe twenty four hours. The people here, they are scared, but they still believe that Marshal Waits will kill the creature. They forget other dangers. They forget themselves. People are turning on each other for food, for water. I cannot stay here.”
100.HELP (Lewis, Nov 25th, 2137) – Heyst, you still there? Why the hell didn’t we have the smarts to stay on the Anesidora? They shut me in a lab over in the Systech spire. For the love of God come find me. Elevators are out and there are bodies everywhere. I’m sure I can hear it in the walls.
Logs 101-120Edit
101.LOW PROFILE (Heyst, Nov 26th, 2137) – ”Meeks, i’m leaving this for you when you wake up. I know that you’re still all over the place after that thing came out of Foster, but you’ve got to stop fucking up like this. You got way too drunk, and told these people sleeping in the mall way too much. I dragged you away when I saw the look in their eyes. We can’t go back there again. No-one can know we’re connected to Marlow and the Anesidora. I’ll come back once you’ve dried out.”

102.RETIREMENT PLAN (Ransome, Nov 20th, 2137) – ”Waits, we should talk about what happened in San Cristobal. Now, it was a nasty business and I understand that you want to deal with it as quietly and quickly as possible, but I wanted to make sure you didn’t do anything rash. I’m talking about catching the specimen without killing it. If we play it smart, we could be set up for life. I have the connections, Waits. I can set it up. You’re getting old, Waits, you can’t do this forever and what are you going to do when Sevastopol closes? You have my number. Ransome out.”
103.IMPOUNDED (Harris, Nov 13th, 2137) – Week beginning 11/11/2137 Marlow.H. ***** Ammunition and weaponry – various **** Marlow.H. ***** Lvl 3 plasma shear – Unauthorized **** Marlow.H. ***** WY proprietary flight recorder unit – USCSS Nostromo **** Marlow.H. ***** Watch, wallet and personal effects **** Marlow.H. ***** Suspected contrabrand medical supplies (Pharmax, Naproleve – no duty stamps) ****
104.SOME KIND OF PARASITE (Lingard, Nov 12th, 2137) – ”Waits, it’s Dr Lingard. I’ve just examined the patient with – well, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s some kind of unknown parasite. I did a quick check on the name they gave me and there’s no one registered under it at Sevastopol. I think she came on board recently. Do you know anything about this? I have no idea what Sinclair and his men were doing, but this should have been picked up during quarantine. Who knows what else they’ve let through? The patient and her captain are waiting for me in the examination room. Get down here, now.”
105.SMYTHE READ THIS (Russel, Oct 11th, 2137) – Don’t be mad, but I went through to the elevator shaft and shut the access door behind me. I had a Joe on my tail, so I had to get out of there. If you can find something to cut through the panel the code is 8382. Don’t worry if not, i’m coming back down for you now. Now sign of the lovebirds, but I’ve got a whole heap of guns and supplies here. Russel
106.AN OUTPOST OF PROGRESS? #2 (Julia Jones, Sep 10th, 2137) – Sevastopol: an outpost of progress? By Julia Jones

Seegson’s frail origins

After Weyland Industries led the way in faster than light travel, Seegson found success mass producing the flight components central to the colonial gold rush that followed. Its ensuring overexpansion and reputation for producing ”Low-cost alternative” to WY branded goods is a matter of public record. In the modern day Seegson is attempting to change the fortunes of ailing colonial outposts. Stations like Sevastopol receive investment, and Seegson-afflicated companies set up shop. But the economic patterns that once worked within the sol system have not flourished in deep space. On Sevastopol, mass-produced no frill androids still sit in their boxes. Machines in research facilities are still shrouded in the plastic they were delivered in. Trading docks are used only by the flourishing black market that the station’s residents have come to rely on.
107.REFORMAT CHAMBER (Russel, Sep 15th, 2137) – Spedding, I’ve set up some blank androids for the VIP Sevastopol sale tour. If you haven’t done it before, just have them lie on the slab in the reformat chamber. It’ll connect to APOLLO and upgrade them with the latest programming. Let’s hope they bite. Russel.
108.INVESTIGATIONS (Ransome, Nov 26th, 2137) – ”This is Seegson executive Ransome speaking, I just woke up to find a Working Joe in my suite and when I asked what the hell it was doing it lunged for me. I had to leave my own fucking apartment! Send your best technicians to APOLLO core and find out what the hell is going on, now! Get those things under control, I want a full report ASAP.”
109.RE: PLANS TONIGHT (Spedding, Nov 26th, 2137) – Suzanne, sweetheart. I’m going to have to raincheck. I’m getting reports from downstairs about abnormal android behavior – it might have something to do with all these folks going missing. I need you to get to the Synthetic Showroom and shut yourself in. There’s a lockdown button near my desk from when these machines were actually worth something. Don’t worry about them. They’re only display models. Just sit tight – i’ll sort this out and we can celebrate the deal finally going through when we’re not on company time.
110.LAST CHANCE (Ransome, Sep 16th, 2137) – Spedding, i’m expecting the VIPs to get here early, so I want you and your people ready and waiting to greet them. The clock’s ticking down and this is our last chance to salvage something from this piece of shit. I want your people to answer their every whim, every vice and laugh at every one of their fucking jokes. Take them to the showroom when they’re ready – don’t rush them and don’t bore them with speeches. If they say they want something changed in the Working Joes, just say yes. We can let the tech heads worry about it later. I hope you have your best people on this.

112.RE: SMYTHE READ THIS (Smythe, Dec 11th, 2137) – What do you mean you shut access door to the elevator?? All your guns and supplies mean jack shit to me when the Synthetic chasing you is STILL FUCKING DOWN HERE!! I don’t think it’s seen me. It’s stood staring at your old magazines in the blood plant overlook. Get back down here and open this door: now.
113.HOLDING OUT (Russel, Dec 11th, 2137) – I don’t know hoe many of you are still around to get this, but I’ve got weapons and supplies and i’m setting up shop outside the Synthetic Showroom. I’m hoping we’ll be safe from the creature up here. Smythe is with me and waiting to be let up from the fluid plant reception. I still haven’t seen Suzanne, if you’re with her let me know.
114.WHITE ON RED (Spedding, Nov 27th, 2137) – ”This is Spedding in Android Processing. We’ve got a situation – we have white-on-red casualties onstation. I’ve just had an android report to the APTC with head trauma – but he’s covered in blood. Human blood. I’ve alerted the Marshals, put my secretary someplace safe, and right now i’m headed for the transit. I’m going to get a Working Joe to consult APOLLO. Maybe it knows who the hell is to blame for this.”
115.TOMORROW, TOGETHER #3 (Sebastian Sieg, May, 2115) – Together tomorrow: Seegson’s journey into colonial space an official history, by Sebastian Sieg (first printed in ”eye on Seegson”)

Our ascent to Sevastopol

While Seegson prepared for its ascension into colonial space, its foothold was under construction. Sevastopol: a station with unparalleled potential, and a perfect position deep in deep space. Sevastopol began as a freeport, built by Lorenz Systech development and funded by our friends at Geofund Investor. The station’s opening would, however, coincide with tumult in the space race. Years of mismanagement, and the re-routing of the sol-Thedus flight path, left Sevastopol in real danger of being decommissioned. Thankfully, Seegson were waiting in the wings to re-energize this station – among many others! In 2124 we arrived in Sevastopol – and made possible the buzzing cosmopolutan hub you see today!
116.HAZARD CONTAINMENT (Spedding, Nov 28th, 2137) – ”I’ve come over to APOLLO to find out what sent the synthetics crazy. This place has gone to hell. APOLLO’s redirected core android duties, and they’ve just walked away from the maintenance we requested after we got the news. Coolant’s everywhere, gas has escaped, and the primary access lift has itself shut down. I’ve flagged a help request, but apparently i’m forty-fifth in the line. Systems are suddenly are suddenly obsessed with hazard containment. I’m going to find a way down. Spedding out.”
117.APOLLO SALES ONE SHEET (Seegson, Sep 15th, 2137) – APOLLO information sheet Why an APOLLO system for your deep space orbital station? Self-regulation and android maintenance. Security through removal of synthetic self-determination. Instant communications. No interference. Lightning fast data movement across the station reliable. Efficient. Self sustaining. A true Seegson product.
118.SOMETHING UP WITH YOUR SYNTHETICS (Chief Porter – ”Hey, it’s chief. There’s something wrong with your synthetics. The team I requisitioned to asset-strip lower habitation just stopped in their tracks. They barked something about a hazard containment order, tried to get into my control booth and then just marched off. I know I always complain about those spooky, bald bastards, but now I’ve got proof their wiring’s faulty. I’ve got a meeting with your boss Spedding tomorrow, and i’m going to kick some ass. So when he starts kicking your ass…Well, it’s coming from me.”
119.HAZARD CONTAINMENT ALERT (APOLLO systems, Dec 11th, 2137) – APOLLO would ask for your patience during the current: hazard containment alert. Which is currently at level: Omega. Thank you.
120.SOLD! (Ransome, Nov 17th, 2137) – ”Spedding, something crazy just happened. Sevastopol is off the market. We got a buyer. After all those endless presentations and tours, I guess the talks weren’t stalled at all. Someone at company headquarters just had to click his fingers. A message of confirmation just came in, APOLLO’s currently receiving a packet of new operation rulesets, so I guess the deal’s sealed. This is board level, need-to-know stuff until it’s announced to shareholders. Quite the promotion, huh?”
Logs 121-140Edit
121.KEEP THINGS QUIET (Ransome, Nov 21st, 2137) – Spedding, it’s Ransome. With the Weyland Yutani buy-out it’s more important than ever that the flight-recorder hand-over goes without a hitch. They’ll be low level execs and won’t know jack about the buy-out, but if they hear rumors about a ”disappearing people problem”? Well I don’t to want to rock the boat, and neither do you. Let’s just keep everything nice and quiet, we don’t want them having second thoughts.

122.TWISTING IN THE WIND (Ransome, Dec 9th, 2137) – ”This is Seegson executive Ransome, reporting in to the board. You sons of bitches. I was loyal to you and you cheap bastards left me twisting in the wind. I was going to give you the find of a lifetime. I was willing to risk my life for the company. I could have called in a special team, secured the specimen and we all would have been happy. But APOLLO has cut all communications. None of the technicians in APOLLO core are answering my messages. We’re all dying here, you bastards! You threw it all away! Fuck you and fuck your company! Fuck you!”
123.THEY’RE AT THE DOOR (Spedding, Nov 30th, 2137) – ”I’m in APOLLO. There are…Androids at the door. Ransome’s nowhere to be seen. There are conflicts with the hazard containment breach. Synthetic safety procedures are getting bypassed left and right. Comms are offline. I thought it was random, but now i’m not so sure. Oh God, they’re gonna get in. Tell Suzanne I love her.”
124.APOLLO PRIMARY INTERACTION LOG (APOLLO systems, Dec 11th, 2137) – 11/11/2137 Class: Human interaction Request for inter-corporate messaging received. Outgoing message to Weyland-Yutani representatives accepted and monitored.

11/16/2137 Class: Colonial Marshal incident report Temporary emergency measures initiated in San Cristobal Medical Facility. No further information provided.

11/17/2137 Class: External interaction Purchase order received. Weyland-Yutani operational ruleset packet received, verified and installed.

11/23/2137 Class: Colonial marshal incident report Emergency measures initiated in San Cristobal Medical Facility extended. No further information provided. Station scans initiated under WY directive #00043B56.

11/24/2137 Class: Containment hazard alert Unverified scans in reactor systems. Special Order 939 initiated. Priority one. Protect specimen. Maintain station quarantine. Disallow communications.

12/11/2137 Class: Sevastopol arrivals log New inhabitants logged with APOLLO systems by synthetic staff. Ripley, Amanda. Level 2, Weyland-Yutani. Taylor, Nina. Level 4, Weyland-Yutani. Samuels, Christopher. Level 3, Weyland-Yutani. Expendable.

12/11/2137 Class: Containment hazard alert Viable threat to specimen detected in project KG348 hazard lab. Containment hazard alert raised to omega.
125.MISSING ENGINEER (Chief, Dec 1st, 2137) – ”Chief here. Something weird’s happening. Synthetics are on the fritz, so I found some guys to help me out. I sent out one of them into the manufacturing room, but he never came out. Every door’s locked, and he sure as hell couldn’t fit through the air vent without a fight. We don’t know what to do. It doesn’t seems right to keep working without looking for him, but there’s nowhere to look. Our shift’s over soon. I’ll report the incident to Waits and the Marshals.
126.I SAW IT (Chief Porter, Dec 6th, 2137) – ”I saw it. It had its back to me – walking down a corridor like it was the most natural thing in the world. I hid, but when I looked up it wasn’t there. I think it went into the floor. Maybe the the ceiling. Sevastopol’s a maze. It could be living anywhere. This must be what the Marshals have been chasing. This shouldn’t have been kept from me. Chief out.”
127.POWER DELIVERY (Chief, Dec 3rd, 2137) – We need you down in reactor maintenance, Flores. I’ve got reports of localized brown-outs all over the station. I know it’s going to hell on-station, but I can’t see anything up here that would be compromising power delivery. Can you run a full systems check down there? Chief
128.I’M COMING TO FIND YOU (Chief Porter, Dec 7th, 2137) – Flores, if you’re still there, find somewhere safe and Wait, i’m coming down to you. We need to stick together now. Sanders is dead and at least four other engineers are missing. One of those damn androids nearly took my head off, so I’ve scavenged some parts together to make a a weapon. It’s got enough kick to punch a nice clean hole in one of those bastards. I’ll be there as soon as I can. Chief.
129.SHUTTERS CODE (Flores, Dec 4th, 2137) – Chief, i’m heading down to reactor maintenance now as requested. I’ve locked the shutters behind me, the code you’ll need is 6832. Flores
130.LET ME BE A FRIEND TO YOU (Julia Jones, Nov 15th, 2137) – ”Dr Lingard, my name is Julia Jones and i’m a writer covering Sevastopol’s decommissioning. I was hoping to interview you about your experiences on the station….You know, the limited medical resources, the mental effects on patients in deep space, that kind of thing? But look, doctor, I’ve heard there was some kind of incident in the hospital recently. No-one seems to know anything. Doctor, if there’s a major public health issue here on Sevastopol, people need to know. I’m freelance, unbiased. I don’t have any corporate affiliations. I’ll take any statement you’d care to give me. Call me.”
131.FEELING LUCKY (Foster, Oct 20th, 2137) – ”I think we may have broken our losing streak, We’ve barely been scraping a living the past couple of years and the Anesidora is starting to look like the wrecks we salvage. Can’t say the crew’s been faring any better. Then we found that flight recorder. It belongs to a ship, the Nostromo. Weyland-Yutani property. That means there’ll be a reward. But then Marlow had an even better idea: extrapolate the path of the flight recorder to try to find the wreck of the Nostromo. We got lucky, found a distress signal and now we’re following it. This is it. I can feel it in my bones. He always said he’d do right by me.”

132.SIGNAL DETECTED (Foster, Oct 20th, 2137) – Marlow, Heyst says he’s just picked up some kind of signal. I’ve got Lewis trying to decode it now. Could be the Nostromo. Want to come up and see for yourself?
133.APPROACHING SEVASTOPOL (Heyst, Nov 11th, 2137) – ”We’re outside Sevastopol. Marlow and Foster woke up first. She looked terrible. Meeks and me are about to take a shuttle to the station. But, well, this has got to break quarantine procedures, right? It’s Marlow’s ship, she’s Marlow’s wife. Things got heated and Meeks got a bloody nose. So…I don’t know…Maybe the doctors will give her the all-clear and things can get to normal. But if they sniff it out when we get on board, I don’t want any part of it. Marlow doesn’t pay nearly enough for that kind of noise.”
134.TECHNICIAN’S REPORT (Lewis, Oct 24th, 2137) – Technician’s report, 10.24.2137. Marlow, I just had to do some much needed work on the sub-light engines. The old girl was complaining so loudly i’m surprised something didn’t fall off during the last jump. Everything’s holding together for now, but she’ll need a full overhaul soon, and not just for the core systems. We keep pushing her like this and we’re gonna end up being the only salvage crew hitchhiking through deep space. It’s gonna be an expensive job, so let’s hope you’re right about that beacon. It could be our last chance for a decent paycheck. Anyway, I had to reset the door keycode afterwards, the new one is 4510 . Lewis.
135.SEVASTOPOL (Marlow, Oct 26th, 2137) – Log #543374 Whatever it was that attacked itself to Foster is dead. I found it on the floor by her bed; all curled up like a spider. Foster said she felt fine, but I insisted on putting her into hypersleep. That thing must have done something to her, but maybe I can slow the process. Sevastopol’s the nearest station so i’m going to get her checked out. Quarantine will be a problem but I figure the Nostromo flight recorder may be the ticket in. Whatever we have to do.
Sevastopol Station (continued)Edit
136.ANESIDORA HAIL (Waits, Nov 17th, 2137) – ”Anesidora, this is Marshal Waits of Sevastopol. Officially, I should deny your request to dock. Sevastopol is currently being decommissioned and I can’t compromise security for unscheduled vessels. However…In the light of the property you found I will allow a small number of your crew to dock via a short-range shuttle. I must remind you that Sevastopol is entitled to a cut of any reward for return of said-property once it’s on station. Let me know your decision. Waits out.”

137.JOURNAL ENTRY #340 (Axel, Dec 8th, 2137) – ”Axel’s journal entry 340 – Right, got to be quiet now. I’ve found a small hideaway in the Spaceflight Terminal. Not exactly five-star, but it’s cosy enough. I filled a bag with essentials and picked up a few things on the way, making sure I didn’t run into anyone. Too many people with guns on Sevastopol now, shooting at shadows. I mean, I have one myself but i’m not fucking insane. At least here it’s secluded and i’m close to the terminal. So, if there’s a chance of a ship arriving i’ll get a front seat.”
138.CODE FOR REPAIR JOB (Francis, Sep 2nd, 2137) – Hey, Myers. My shift’s over and i’m clocking off. If you turn up to repair the system in the next three hours, I won’t be here. So the code you need is 1851
139.TOMORROW, TOGETHER #4 (Sebastian Sieg, Jun 2115) – Together tomorrow: Seegson’s journey into colonial space an official history, by Sebastian Sieg (first printed in ”eye of Seegson”)

Our synthetic future

With the guidance of key Seegson executive talent, Sevastopol has become an outpost of progress: a trade hub, a vibrant community and the beating heart of the Seegson synthetic solution. Sevastopol is the primary off planet site for the development, sales and maintenance of Seegson androids. From Sevastopol’s unique position in the cosmos we can ship our range of Working Joes wherever they’re needed in colonial space within months, not years. Above and beyond our reliable and cost-efficient synthetic is Sevastopol’s governing AI: Seegson’s award-winning APOLLO system. Through the hard work of our scientists and Seegson’s bold investments, the station is now a showcase for economical and self-governing artificial human operations. Even now our sales executives are overseeing the population of APOLLO mainframes across colonial space! Just as we assured you throughout the journey: we made it to tomorrow, and we did it together.
140.BET ON THE WRONG HORSE (Sinclair, Dec 11th, 2137) – ”This is Sinclair. You guys took too long down there – I had to power down this facility and take the last transit. We can’t afford to keep the sanctuary wide open. All it’ll take is one creature to get in – and all the supplies and weapons we’ve taken will come to jack shit. Me and mine are gonna sit this out till the rescue comes. I’m sorry…I’m sorry, but when you started chasing after a ship that’ll never come you broke with the plan. Sinclair out.”

Logs 141-151Edit
141.NOWHERE TO RUN (Winters, Dec 11th, 2137) – ”I got here when they were sealing the sanctuary. I don’t know what I expected, maybe that they’d change their minds and let me in, maybe that they’d shoot me dead like everyone else on the station who gets in their way. They shut the door in my face. I can hear movements from the floor below me. I haven’t got long. Sinclair and his people have Sevastopol’s food supplies and much of its weaponry, but I heard the voice of children too. I’d wondered where the children had gone. Maybe they can keep these monsters from them. Despite it all, I hope they do.”

142.SEALED IN (Sinclair, Dec 11th, 2137) – ”If you’re listening to this, and you’re on the team, we’ve sealed the habitation sanctuary. There’s one way in, one way out. I’ve still got raiding parties heading out to loot supplies and weapons, but it looks like we shut it off just in time. The Seegson synthetics have started moving away from their stations. I’ve seen a trail of strangled bodies in public areas. So, be aware. Oh, and if you’re listening to this, and you’re not on the team, don’t come find us. We will shoot.”

143.SHUT OUT (Denver, Dec 11th, 2137) – Is anyone there? It’s Denver. I’m back with the supplies, but i’m locked out and nobody’s answering. What happened? Was there an attack? It’s getting worse out here, you have to let me back inside now – my wife is in there, she’ll tell you who I am. I have the supplies! Please answer me!
144.LAST STAND (Sinclair, Dec 11th, 2137) – Mendonca, we rounded up everyone we could find and are camped out in the rec room. The security system we discussed is rigged up, but you won’t be able to get in the old way. We caught a stranger sneaking in – after a couple of hours he confessed who let him in and we threw them both out. We’ve only got limited space and supplies here and we’ve got to control who gets in – if they want in, they’ve got to bring something to the table. What you need is in the usual place. I don’t want to say here but you’ll know what I mean. I changed the code to 1984. Use what you find there. Of course, we’ll need to make sure you’ve got the supplies you promised us, but we’ll check you upon entrance – i’m sure you’ve got what we need. After all, I vouched for you. Don’t make me regret it. Jake
145.BLOOD ON MY HANDS (Sinclair, Dec 11th, 2137) – ”Last will and testament of some fuck you don’t give a shit about. We couldn’t keep them out. My wife is dead. My children have been taken. I tried, but I couldn’t stop them. They broke through our defences. There’s…There’s so much blood on my hands. This is for the rescue party, for Seegson or…I don’t know…Whoever has to clean up this mess. We held out in here as long as we could. You didn’t come fast enough. You fucked it. Just send in the marines or blow this place up. Take these creatures back to hell.”
146.GOODBYE (Mike Tanaka, Dec 8th, 2137) – ”Anne, I am so sorry. You were right, I never should have come here. Please tell Beth and Heidi, tell them that I love them more than anything. God, it hurts so much. I found something, Anne. I don’t know what it was, but I found it and now it’s killed me. It’s killing everyone. I have to tell someone…There has to be a record. I was so stupid, Anne. I should have stayed with you. I wish…I wish…”
147.STABILITY ALERT (Automated alert system, Dec 11th, 2137) – Distruption to orbital stabilizers has been confirmed. Orbital stabilizer array back-ups are offline. Systems waiting for orbital emergency convenor response.
148.SEVASTOPOL INITIALIZATION (Hope, Aug 4th, 2105) – I can now confirm that all Sevastopol systems are operational, and our KG348 orbit is no longer degenerative. My thanks to the tow team. We’re open for business. Good luck everyone.
149.TRANSIT OFFICE CODE (Unknown civilian, Dec 11th, 2137) – *Code for the transit office is 0482 if you need supplies*
150.CODE ON BLUEPRINT (APOLLO blueprint, Dec 11th, 2137) – *Try to remember this time* 4930
151.TORRENS CO-ORDINATES (Observatory chamber, Dec 11th, 2137) – Co-ordinate conversion input: 35 75

1.NO TITLE (Ash) – ”The Nostromo has landed on the surface of the planetoid the acoustical beacon is transmitting from. Dallas, Kane and Lambert are making preparations to approach the beacon on foot. Surface structure is basalt, with traces of rhyolite and probable lava overlays. Atmosphere – inert nitrogen, a little oxygen and high levels of CO2. Pressure reads at ten to the fourth dynes per cm. Quite the storm raging out there.” (Crew Expendable)

2.NO TITLE (Samuel Brett) – ”So the thing on Kane’s face – Ash cut it. Guess what came out? Acid blood. No shit. Burnt a hole through three decks, wrecked my good pen. Dallas said to check it didn’t hit anything vital, but I couldn’t find any real damage. Gonna need one hell of a paint job though and I know who they’ll ask to do it. We should never have landed on this damn ball; me and Parker, we told them that. Brett – over and out.” (Crew Expendable)
3.NO TITLE (Joan Lambert) – ”We followed the beacon and found…I don’t know…Some kinda ship. Kane went down to check a part of it…and…there was something down there. Lots of…Things down there. All these eggs full of creatures. One attached itself to his suit – burnt through his visor and onto his face. They let us back into the ship, thank God. Kane’s still alive, but they don’t seem to know what to do about him.” (Crew Expendable)
4.NO TITLE (Ash) – ”This is Ash, Science Officer of the Nostromo. This is an official record in the ship log of my actions today. A member of the crew was compromised by an unknown creature. I made the decision to allow him back on board without following established quarantine procedure. Looking at the bigger picture, I feel comfortable with this decision. It was a risk I was willing to take and I will abide by whatever the Company decides upon my return.” (Crew Expendable)

5.NO TITLE (Ellen Ripley) – ”There’s something loose on the ship. This unknown organism. It came out of Kane. We just ejected his body out into space. I know how Ash missed this thing on the medical scans, it would have been visible. Anyway he’s putting together some sort of tracking device to help us catch it, and Brett and Parker are rigging up something to drive it into the airlock. But this never should have happened. This is why we have quarantine regulations – for this reason. Anyway – Ripley, Signing off.” (Last Survivor/Corporate Lockdown)

6.NO TITLE (Arthur Dallas) – ”Ash called me down to medical. Told me something happened. Might be a lot of something, or it might be a lot of nothing but the parasite is dead. Just crawled into the overhead and died. Damn near gave Ripley a coronary. I left it to Ash to decide what we’re gonna do with it. Anything science is his department. At least we can concentrate on getting back home. (Last Survivor)

7.NO TITLE (Ellen Ripley) – ”Dallas, have you approved my request yet? I haven’t seen any movement on it. If we can send out work logs via Sevastopol’s relay, surely we can send out a couple of personal messages too? Just take the cost out of my salary. I just want to let my daughter know that I will be home late, it’s important. Ripley out.” (Last Survivor)

8.NO TITLE (Dennis Parker) – ”We took off safely, more or less. We’re still blind on B and C decks and the reserve power’s out, but the ship’s in okay shape. For the record, Dallas made the call to leave before we could finish repairs. Kane’s awake now, but because of all this horsecrap we’re ten months out of Sol. No way am I selling for a half share. You can keep that in your log. Parker out.” (Last Survivor)

9.NO TITLE (Ash – ”Science officer’s log. Due to a much depleted crew the Nostromo’s Warrent Officer is in the process of collating with Mother. There is a somewhat high probablity of her discovering Special Order 937. I am containing the incident. The organism is deadly, and it’s entirely likely that – whatever the outcome – it’s safe procurement and analysis is assured. Ash signing off.” (Last Survivor)

10.RE: OUR MUTUAL ”FRIEND” (K. Lingard, 2137) – Waits, I think you should read these. It’s an archive of every log I could get my hands on where Ransome has blackmailed or threatened someone. There’s evidence here that he stole samples of the incident from my lab. He’s been coercing Gemini Exoplanet Solutions into researching them for him. I’m watching people die and all he’s thinking about is how to spin a profit.

I know you’re going to want to ask me some serious questions after reading, but if answering them means you can nail the slippery bastard it’ll be worth it. I just hope we all live through this to see him get his.

Purge local files? Y/N (Corporate Lockdown)
11.NO TITLE, (Nina Taylor, 2137) – ”Sevastopol, this is Weyland-Yutani executive administrator Nina Taylor. We confirmed receipt of your transmission. I’m one of the team assigned to collect the Nostromo flight recorder. The black box you have in your possession is of primary importance to Weyland-Yutani, and under existing corporate agreements we should remind you that you must neither attempt to read it’s contents, nor disclose it’s presence to any interested parties. We will be with you soon. A private message for Marshal Waits will follow.” (Corporate Lockdown)
12.SENIOR STAFF ONLY (2137) – Restricted use: Senior San Cristobal staff only. Senior Staff ID confirmed: SEV6734. Dr. Lingard, K.

Initiate Emergency Hazard Cleanse? (Trauma)
13.EMERGENCY CAMP LOCKDOWN (2137) – IMPORTANT: FOR ALL INHABITANTS. EVERYONE is responsible for the safety of this camp. We have all lost loved ones and colleagues through stupid mistakes and inexperience. We CANNOT afford to slip up now. Everyone who leaves camp must:

1.Note their absence in the camp manifest and when they expect to be back. 2.Leave their ID tags within the camp. Upon returning, you will be asked your ID number on the tag. REMEMBER YOUR NUMBER. Fail to do so and you will be turned away, no exceptions. We cannot risk the safety of the camp for one person.

If at any point you believe the camp to be under attack, start the lockdown procedure that can be activated below. THIS IS FOR EMERGENCY ONLY

14.FINAL STAGE READY (Waits, 2137) – Ricardo, press send on this message when you’ve got to the area. I want a heads up before the explosives go off.

15.RECEIPT OF TRANSMISSION (Nina Taylor, 2137) – ”This is a private transmission for Marshal Waits from Nina Taylor at Weyland-Yutani. The Nostromo Black Box is of primary importance to The Company. I am therefore authorized to offer you financial incentives to guarantee a smooth safe retrieval. However, if the data held on the device is compromised or shared, in any way, legal ramifications will be severe. Please respond. Taylor out.” (The Trigger)
Oddly, log 149 is not an actual archive log; it is obtained after encountering a fellow survivor whom Ripley warns that the Drone is nearby. In exchange the survivor tells Amanda a code for supplies and walks off to safety. Afterwards, the code will appear on log sub-menu listed as number 149.
DLC log 5 also appears in the DLC Corporate Lockdown. The message recorded by Ripley is taken by Ransome to be used as a bargaining chip to get on board the Torrens.
Although DLC log 11 is virtually identical to that of audio log 34 regarding it’s text, there are some minor changes to it. A possible explanation to this would be that Taylor simply sent another message to a comms area and attempted to recite the dialogue spoken in her last message.
Kane is the only Nostromo crew member to have recorded no audio logs.

Alien: Isolation is a 2014 first-person survival/horror/stealth video game developed by Creative Assembly and published by SEGA for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. Ports for Linux/SteamOS and OS X were also developed by Feral Interactive and released in October 2015. The game follows Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, as she searches for answers surrounding the disappearance of her mother following the loss of the Nostromo. Her search leads her to the decommissioned space stationSevastopol, where she encounters a deadly Alien that has massacred the station’s inhabitants.

Fifteen years after the disappearance of her mother in deep space, Amanda Ripley is approached by Samuels, a representative of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, who informs her that the flight recorder from her mother’s vanished ship, the Nostromo, has been located. The black box is being held aboard Sevastopol Station, a remote freeport space station in orbit around the gas giant KG-348operated by the Seegson Corporation. Samuels offers Amanda the chance to join the team being sent to retrieve it, in order that she might learn what happened to her mother. Ripley agrees, and travels to Sevastopol with Samuels and Taylor, a lawyer representing Weyland-Yutani, aboard the cargo ship Torrens. Upon arrival at Sevastopol, Captain Verlaine finds the station damaged and communications with its occupants scrambled and unintelligible. Unable to dock, Ripley, Samuels and Taylor attempt to spacewalk over to the station to investigate, but their EVA line is severed by debris from an explosion and Ripley is separated from the others.

Ripley enters Sevastopol via an airlock and finds herself unable to contact the rest of her team. The station itself is largely deserted, its inhabitants reduced to small bands of frightened, paranoid looters hoarding scavenged resources who react violently to anyone outside their group. Ripley encounters a man namedAxel, whom she convinces to help her in exchange for a ride off the station aboard the Torrens. Axel explains the current breakdown in civil society is due to a ”monster” that is loose aboard Sevastopol. The two evade a group of hostile survivors, but Axel is killed when an unseen Alien impales him with its tail and drags him into a nearby vent. A terrified Ripley flees the area on Sevastopol’s transit system.

After encountering more hostile survivors, Ripley eventually finds the Nostromo’s flight recorder, but discovers that the data it contains has been corrupted. Soon afterwards she encounters the Alien for the first time, but manages to evade the creature after witnessing its slaughter of other humans on the station. Ripley travels to Sevastopol’s communications center, hoping to re-establish long-range comms so that she might contact Samuels, but finds that the station’s Working Joe androids are hostile to this act and are attempting to prevent it; she witnesses one survivor who proceeds her, Hughes, being brutally murdered by one of the synthetics. After acquiring a modified motion tracker, Ripley successfully contacts Samuels, who tells her that Taylor was injured in the earlier EVA accident. After joining them in person, Ripley goes to the station’smedical facility to recover a trauma kit to treat Taylor. She is helped by Dr. Kuhlman, who directs Ripley via the intercom, and must again avoid the Alien, which stalks her through the medical facility’s corridors. Kuhlman is killed by the creature when he ventures out of his office, but Ripley manages to locate the necessary supplies and escape.

Upon returning to Samuels and Taylor, the group is found by Colonial Marshal Waits and his deputy Ricardo, who explain that the Alien was brought aboard the station by the crew of the Anesidora, the ship that recovered the Nostromo flight recorder. As a result, Waits has been holding Marlow, the captain of theAnesidora, in one of the cells at the Marshal Bureau’s headquarters. Ripley speaks with Marlow and learns that the Anesidora crew followed the flight data stored on the Nostromo’s black box in the hopes of finding and salvaging the ship itself. Instead, they found the derelict on LV-426, where Marlow’s wife Foster was impregnated by a Facehugger while investigating the ship’s cargo hold. Marlow brought her to Sevastopol for treatment, unwittingly unleashing the Alien on its populace.

Now faced with the rampaging Alien, Waits convinces Ripley to help him destroy the creature by luring it to a remote section of the station that can be jettisoned, hoping to seal the Xenomorph inside before ejecting the entire module into space. Ripley reluctantly acts as the bait in the scheme, but once the Alien is contained Waits betrays her and ejects the module with her still inside. Ripley manages to fend off the Alien with aflamethrower, finds an EVA suit and performs a risky space jump back to Sevastopol, while the jettisoned module falls into the crushing atmosphere of KG-348 with the Alien still aboard, killing the creature.

With the threat disposed of, the situation aboard the station appears back under control until the station’s Working Joes abruptly begin hunting down and killing the station’s remaining human inhabitants, including Waits and most of his men, though Ricardo survives. In order to put a stop to the slaughter, Samuels interfaces with the station’s controlling artificial intelligence, APOLLO. Despite Ripley’s attempts to save him, Samuels is killed by APOLLO’s defensive countermeasures, but not before he opens a path for Ripley to APOLLO’s control core. Upon communicating with the computer, Ripley discovers that Sevastopol was purchased by Weyland-Yutani shortly before the Torrens arrived, and the company subsequently programmed APOLLO with Special Order 939, instructing it to protect the Alien at all costs so that the company might recover it. Ripley demands to know why APOLLO is continuing to follow out this directive when the Alien is no longer aboard the station. APOLLO directs her to the station’s reactor core where she discovers a nest, inside which many of the original creature’s victims have been cocooned and used as hosts for more Aliens. Ripley initiates a reactor purge to destroy the nest, but multiple Aliens manage to escape the electrical discharge and flee into the station.

Ricardo informs Ripley that Taylor, who was in fact sent by Weyland-Yutani to ensure the recovery of the Alien, has freed Marlow from custody in return for the co-ordinates of the derelict on LV-426. However, Marlow has taken her hostage and fled to his ship. Ripley pursues them in an ambulance shuttle in the hopes of using the Anesidora to escape Sevastopol. On board, Marlow shows Ripley the data from the Nostromoflight recorder, which includes a personal message from her mother regarding her motives for destroying her ship. Marlow reveals he plans to detonate the Anesidora’s fusion reactor to destroy Sevastopol, ensuring the Aliens do not come into contact with the rest of humanity. Taylor knocks Marlow unconscious with a wrench when he is distracted and helps Ripley to prevent the reactor explosion, but they are only partially successful. Both Taylor and the unconscious Marlow are killed by an electrical overload while Ripley barely escapes as the ship explodes. While the reduced blast is not large enough to destroy Sevastopol, it damages the station’s gravity stabilizers and its orbit around KG-348 begins to decay.

Now running out of time, Ripley and Ricardo realign Sevastopol’s communications array to contact theTorrens for evacuation, but Ricardo is subdued by a Facehugger and Ripley is forced to leave him. With the docking umbilical damaged, Ripley starts to don an EVA suit to spacewalk to the Torrens, but is attacked by an Alien and dragged into an air duct. She awakens to find she has been cocooned in another nest but manages to escape before she can be impregnated with a Chestburster. With the station beginning to fall apart all around her, she returns to the airlock, dons an EVA suit and releases the docking clamps securing the Torrens to Sevastopol, escaping moments before the station begins to disintegrate, finally exploding in KG-348’s atmosphere. Back aboard the Torrens, Ripley abruptly loses contact with Verlaine, and subsequently discovers an Alien has boarded the ship as well. The creature corners her in an airlock and prepares to kill her, but Ripley, still in her EVA suit, jettisons both herself and the Alien into space. The game ends with Ripley drifting silently in space, waking as a searchlight crosses her face.

Voice CastEdit

The game is played from a first-person perspective and focuses heavily on slow-paced stealth and horror gameplay, in contrast the frantic action-adventure tone prevalent in many preceding Alien video games.Creative Assembly have stated that inspiration for the game’s setting, Sevastopol Station, was taken fromBioShock and Dishonored. A key feature of the game is its Alien enemy. Whereas as many previous games feature entire swarms of Xenomorphs as enemies, only one Xenomorph is present for the majority of the game. While it will appear in certain pre-determined, scripted events, it more often appears at random, forcing players to be wary at all times.

The player facing the Alien with aFlamethrower, the only weapon to have any real effect against it.

After first encountering the Alien near the beginning of the story, if the player remains in any one location for too long, the creature will appear and begin hunting them. Similarly, if the player makes too much noise (i.e. running, knocking over objects or shooting/being shot at by human survivors), the Xenomorph will appear and begin tracking the source of the noise. Vents and lockers can be used to hide from the creature. However, the Alien cannot be killed with the weaponry available to the player, and is capable of learning from the player’s actions over the course of the game,[1] meaning evasive or offensive actions that are successful early on may become less so over time — for example, if the player frequently hides from the Alien in the ventilation ducts of Sevastopol Station, it will in turn begin searching these areas more aggressively. Typically, any damage taken from the Alien results in instant death, thus the player is forced to avoid and hide from the Alien rather than confronting it in combat, the latter of which typically proves fatal.

Despite the developers claiming the game would have no Facehuggers and no more than one Xenomorph ahead of release, several Facehuggers are encountered in the game, and multiple Xenomorphs stalk the player in some later sections (although in practice there are never more than two at once). The initial denial of such scenarios on the part of Creative Assembly was presumably in order to maintain the surprise for players upon reaching those sections of the game.

As well as the Xenomorph, the player has to deal with several other types of enemy, including hostileWorking Joe synthetics, Seegson Security operatives and other desperate human survivors. Often, the player can choose to either confront or avoid these opponents. While the Xenomorph seemingly has no interest in synthetic enemies, it can be lured into conflict with human opponents, adding a tactical element to the gameplay. As well as traditional weapons, the game features a crafting system allowing the player to construct items to use against enemies, typically consisting of noisemakers, Molotov cocktails and other distraction devices.

Numerous archive logs and crewmember ID tags can be picked up throughout the campaign as collectibles.

As well as the main story campaign, the game also features an additional mode known as Survivor, which tasks the player with escaping a unique map in the quickest time possible, whilst being hunted by the Alien. Additional bonus objectives can be completed along the way for additional points. These points are then totalled up upon successful completion of the map and added to an online leaderboard. Players globally can therefore compete for the best score. The game initially shipped with a single map for Survivor mode, ”Basement”, but others were later made available as DLC.

A job ad for Creative Assembly’s then-unnamed Alien title.[2]

On May 12th, 2011, a new game based on the original film Alien was announced on Twitter by Ed Vaizey,[3] who had recently visited Creative Assembly’s studio.[4] No information was given about the project at the time, except that it was to be developed by Creative Assembly,[3] best known for their work on the Total War game series.[5] SEGA later confirmed to CVG that Creative Assembly was making a new Alien game and hoped the title would be a ”peer to Dead Space 2”. Neither the studio nor the publisher would be drawn on confirming a genre for the game, and neither would say if it was to be a strategy title — the genre Creative Assembly is best known for — or a more traditional Alien game. Creative director Mike Simpson said that he’d been given the directive to win awards by SEGA, but did not feel overly pressured because ”[Creative Assembly] like winning awards”. ”This is very much a triple-A project,” SEGA West boss Mike Hayes added. Creative Assembly began hiring new staff to handle the project, increasing its staff from 160 people to 200 in a matter of months.[6]

In February 2013, a verified SEGA QA Tester who had worked on the company’s previous Alien title, Aliens: Colonial Marines, briefly mentioned the upcoming game in a post on Reddit, additionally shedding more light on the different tone the game was to take.

we are making the new alien game with creative asembly who make total war. That game looks amazing. Very dark, very slow paced (in a good way). The textures and lighting look really really good. I’ve seen it running on a PC. The PS4 devkit looks like a computer. It looks as good if not better running as any super high end pc. We did not have those controllers, but they look like what was promised.

The image leaked on Twitter in January 2014.[7]

In October 2013 it was revealed that 20th Century Fox had filed a trademark for ”Alien: Isolation” for use with computer game and video game software, downloadable mobile software and decorative magnets.[8] In December, several pieces of conceptual artwork for the game were leaked on Twitter by user ”lifelower”.[9][10][11][12] The following month, lifelower leaked another iamge, this time of the game’s Xenomorph antagonist.[13] Shortly afterwards, the game was officially listed on the Xbox Marketplace and the game was officially announced.[14]

Alien: Isolation was the cover feature in the January issue of Italian gaming magazine Game Republic. The 10-page article within featured new images from the game as well as details from SEGA and Creative Assembly, including length and platform information.[15]

During development, the creative team extensively researched the sets and props of Alien, which they sought to emulate as realistically and accurately as possible. To this end, they were provided with three terabytes of original production materials from the film by 20th Century Fox, including set blueprints, behind the scenes photos, prop notes and conceptual drawings by the likes of Ron Cobb and Mœbius.[16] Creative lead Alistair Hope recalled, ”It was like that moment in Pulp Fiction where they open the suitcase. We were stunned that all this stuff existed. For them to be able to drop that amount of material on us was great. It gave us a really good insight into how that first film was made.”[17] The huge amount of material provided and its detail in turn inspired the team to put a similar amount of effort into their own design work.

Despite the future setting, the game was designed from the point of view of late 1970s set design, in order to feel tonally consistent with the 1979 film. For example, the game features clunky machinery like telephone receivers, monochrome displays, CRT monitors and reel-to-reel tape recorders. Artist Jon McKellan noted, ”We had this rule: If a prop couldn’t have been made in ’79 with the things that they had around, then we wouldn’t make it either.”[18] To create period authentic distortion on in-game monitors, the developers recorded their animations onto VHS and Betamax video recorders, then filmed those sequences playing on an ”old curvy portable TV” while adjusting the tracking settings.[1]

Gameplay elements cut from the game during development included a more extensive weapons crafting system, the effects of the Alien’s acid blood, and the ability to play in a third-person perspective.[17]

Downloadable ContentEdit

Extra content in the form of two bonus levels, Crew Expendable and Last Survivor, which featured most of the original cast of Alien reprising their roles from the film, were packaged with various pre-order editions of the game. While these bonus levels were initially exclusive to these pre-order editions, they were later be made available for download separately.[19]

Additional DLC, in the form of five map packs for the game’s Survivor mode, each with a new playable character either alluded to or briefly featured in the main singleplayer campaign, was made available in the months following the game’s release.

Crew ExpendableEdit

Main article: Crew Expendable

The first bonus level, Crew Expendable, is packaged with both the Nostromo Edition and the Ripley Edition of the game and takes place soon after Brett is killed by the Alien abaord the Nostromo. In it, players assume the role of either Ripley, Dallas or Parker as they attempt to flush the creature into the Nostromo’s airlock.

Last SurvivorEdit

The second bonus level, Last Survivor, is exclusive to the Ripley Edition of the game, only available from select retailers. It takes place immediately after Parker and Lambert have been killed by the Alien. In it, players take control of Ripley, now alone aboard the Nostromo, as she must activate the ship’s self destruct system and flee before it detonates, all while being stalked by the Alien.

Corporate LockdownEdit

Main article: Corporate Lockdown

The first piece of post-launch DLC, entitled Corporate Lockdown, became available for download on October 28, 2014. Corporate Lockdown allows gamers to play as Seegson executive Ransome as he attempts to escape from Sevastopol when the Alien begins slaughtering its inhabitants. It features three maps, ”Severance”, ”Scorched Earth” and ”Loose Ends”, stretching from the corporate penthouse in the Solomons Habitation Tower to the San Cristobal Medical Facility. Corporate Lockdown also introduces a new Gauntlet mode, which tasks players with completing the three new maps back-to-back without dying.

Main article: Trauma

The second DLC pack, Trauma, became available for download on December 2, 2014. In it, players take on the role of Dr. Lingard as she seeks to destroy the research she conducted on the Xenomorph, lest it fall into the wrong hands. Along the way, she must collect supplies for her camp, which houses many survivors in desperate need. The pack features three maps, ”Reoperation”, ”Crawl Space” and ”Overrun”.

Safe HavenEdit

The third DLC pack, Safe Haven, was released on January 13, 2015. In this story players take on the role ofHughes and must venture out of the only safe room on Sevastopol to find supplies. This DLC allows the player to explore Gemini Systems and the Bacchus Apartments as you try to return to the safe room. It also introduces the all new Salvage mode, in which the player must complete 10 out of the 20 available missions without dying. A safe room is available between each mission for the player to collect items as well as save the game, (in exchange for points).

Lost ContactEdit

Main article: The Trigger

The fifth and final DLC, The Trigger was released on March 3, 2015. Assuming the role of Ricardo, players must help to set explosive traps for the Alien across Sevastopol Station. The pack features three maps, ”Damage Control”, ”The Package” and ”Blast Seat”.

Alien: Isolation received generally very positive reviews from critics, especially in contrast to SEGA’s previous Alien game, Aliens: Colonial Marines. Aggregating review websites GameRankings and Metacritic gave the Microsoft Windows version 82.36% based on 11 reviews and 80/100 based on 30 reviews, the Xbox One version 78.92% based on 12 reviews and 77/100 based on 16 reviews and the PlayStation 4 version 78.22% based on 29 reviews and 78/100 based on 37 reviews.

David Houghton from GamesRadar gave the game 4.5/5, praising the graphics and its intelligent AI which keeps the game unpredictable. He also thought that the game provided a lot of thrilling, engrossing, profoundly fulfilling rewards and will probably make players feel more alive than a video game has in years.

Andy Kelly from PC Gamer gave the game 93/100, stating that the game is the one the Alien series has always deserved. He praised the audio design, as well as the reactive AI of the Alien. He also thought that the pacing of the story was perfect, even though it took him about 25 hours to finish the game. However, he criticized the disappointing story as well as the flat voice acting and insubstantial characters, but he still summarized the game as a ”deep, fun stealth game set in an evocatively realised sci-fi world…”.

Alex Dale from Official Xbox Magazine gave the game 9/10. He described the game as a ”unique stealth-horror thriller that combines great pacing and smart design with razor-sharp AI that’s unpredictable in all the right ways”. However, he criticized the punishing difficulty of the game, saying players will suffer harsh punishment for small failures.

Chris Carter from Destructoid gave the game 8.5/10, praising the unscripted and dynamic Alien AI. He also praised the Survivor mode which could be unlocked roughly after 15 hours. He described it as the best part of the game because the mode offered different feelings and experiences for players every time when they played it.

Dan Whitehead from Eurogamer gave the game 8/10. He praised the superb lighting and unusually compelling environment design. He said that the game has created some of his most tense and memorable horror gaming moments ever. He also described the Alien’s free-roaming AI creation as ”a stroke of genius”. However, he criticized the crafting system as too simple to the point of being shallow. He also criticized the length of the game as it is too long and felt that the game overstayed its welcome.

Dave Meikleham from Computer and Video Games also gave the game 8/10, praising its sound design and the horror moments, but noting he encountered occasional frame rate issues. He also thought that if the game were 30% shorter, it would be a much bolder and sharper experience.

Jeff Marchiafava from Game Informer gave the game 7.75/10. He too thought that it is the closest game to capture the promise of the Alien franchise and believed that it is the experience fans of the franchise have waited for a long time. However, he compared the game to Dead Space and believed that the environments and actions failed to instill the sense of dread that the movies or other horror games had delivered. He also criticized the ‘wooden’ animation of the characters, as well as the unhelpful map, unimpressive voice acting and dialogue.

A notable negative review came from Ryan McCaffrey of IGN, who gave the game 5.9/10. He found it disappointing, despite being a perfect Alien game on paper. He believed that the genuine scares of being hunted by an unstoppable alien were diluted by repetition. He also criticized the Alien’s AI being too hard to play against. However, this review was met with a large negative backlash from fans.

To coincide with the release of the game, Dark Horse Comics released a prequel comic book that told several short stories involving survivors aboard Sevastopol before Amanda Ripley arrives. Initially only given away for free at San Diego Comic-Con 2014, a digital version was packaged with certain pre-order editions of the game and later made available as a free limited-time download from the game’s website during December 2014. Titan Books also published a behind the scenes book, The Art of Alien: Isolation, which included a wealth of conceptual and development artwork from the game.

  • While most of the cast from Alien reprised their roles in the game, Ian Holm (Ash) and John Hurt(Kane) were absent due to scheduling conflicts; Holm allowed his likeness to be used and another actor provided Ash’s voice, while Kane was absent from the game entirely.
  • Notably, many of the game’s characters have the original winged sun emblem for Weyland-Yutani (as seen in Alien) on their uniforms, indicating that the more recognizable interlocked W/Y logo seen inAliens had not yet been adopted by 2137.
  • Small Easter eggs are hidden throughout the game that reference the first two Alien films:
    • In Seegson Synthetics, the player finds the corpse of a man (later identified as Smythe) who has been killed by a synthetic forcing a rolled-up magazine down his throat, a reference to the way in which Ash attempts to kill Ripley in Alien.
    • Before encountering Axel in the Sevastopol Spaceflight Terminal, the player can enter a room on the right inside which the sound of a meowing cat is just barely audible, possibly referencing Ripley’s cat Jones.
    • Children’s drawings can be found on the station, one of which has the numbers 1979 scrawled on it, an obvious reference to Alien, which was released in 1979.
    • Numerous dippy birds are also spread across the station, a reference to the one seen in the film.
    • In the first level of the game, in the hypersleep chamber, an open magazine can be found with a picture of a man highly resembling James Cameron, director of Aliens, on the page. Additionally, the headline reads ”is there room for the little guy”.
    • The United States Colonial Marine Corps are mentioned once in the game, in an audio log recorded by Sinclair, which urges the listener to ”bring in the Marines or blow this place up”.
  • Small origami unicorns are found scattered around Sevastopol Station, a reference to the 1982 movieBlade Runner, which was directed by Ridley Scott (who also directed Alien, as well as Prometheusand Alien: Covenant).
  • In the novel Alien: Sea of Sorrows, Rollins mentions that both Ellen and Amanda Ripley have previously thwarted Weyland-Yutani’s attempts to recover a Xenomorph specimen.[20] This was a pre-release hint at the events of Alien: Isolation.
  • Previously, it was believed that the distress signal from the derelict ship on LV-426 had been deactivated by damage due to volcanic activity, but the game shows that was in fact Henry Marlow who disabled the signal when he and the crew of the Anesidora found the ship on LV-426.
  • The exact origin of the Eggs used to create the multiple Xenomorphs encountered later in the game was left deliberately vague by the developers, with both Eggmorphing and an unseen Queen being possibilities. The development team later confirmed that a Queen was responsible, but stated that showing her would not have fit with the game’s focus on the first film in the series, and would also have led players to expect a boss-type battle with her, which went against the game’s less action-oriented style.[21] As a result, they decided it was better to leave the issue a mystery. As writer Will Porter later said, ”She’s down there somewhere, in amongst the cacophony, but Ripley was lucky enough not to bump into her.”[22]
  • This is the only ”canonical” chapter in the franchise in which the Chestburster is conspicuously lacking an actual onscreen appearance, and a Chestbursting birth is never witnessed, although the aftermath is seen in the form of multiple corpses discovered by the protagonist/player Amanda.
  • While the revelation that there is more than one Xenomorph on Sevastopol is not unveiled until the player reaches the nest, there are clues to this earlier in the game, including the corpses that show evidence of having birthed Chestbursters.
  • Alien: Isolation is notably the only video game from the Alien franchise to be referenced in Alien: The Weyland-Yutani Report, which otherwise focuses exclusively on the events of the films and ignores the plots of the games.

ATTENTION: Major A. Tsukasa

Based on the data sourced from NL1331, we divided our research into four phases. The final phase of our research, testing high level XM response, is now complete. As expected, reactions to the hyper XMsaturated environment inside NLPRIME varied from none to extreme. Three high level Sensitives were identified from a candidate group of twelve.

Fig 1. Non Sensitive vs. High Level Sensitive EEG Response

Candidates 3, 8 and 9 (the high level Sensitives we identified), showed promise far beyond what we had initially hypothesized. This transcript from an interview exemplifies what we observed:

RESEARCHER:     Did you…
CANDIDATE 8:     Did I sense the shadows of XM? Of course. There’s a Portal here, too. Well, there was, 1300 years ago. A garden. Peaceful. Then, a fire. Two died. I can sense them, too.
CANDIDATE 8:     Don’t bother asking your questions. Yes, I can access memories with 100% accuracy. Yes some of those memories are not my own. Yes, I am currently visualizing multiple timelines simultaneously in great detail. Yes all my other senses are hyperaware…
RESEARCHER:     … those are not the questions on my list, sir.
CANDIDATE 8:     That is the data your questions are designed to acquire. Pass my answers on to your supervisors and they will be satisfied. May I go?

Candidate 9 in enhanced state
Fig 2. fMRI of Candidate 9 while in enhanced state

As you had predicted, Major Tsukasa, the high XM dose enabled these Sensitives to do things we previously did not consider possible. During her interview, Candidate 3 noted that one of our researchers was not feeling well and should be sent home. This researcher was in a building 2 km away at the time and had never met Candidate 3 or been in her presence. The enhanced state lasted nearly 11 days.

At this stage we recommend field testing begin. Willer Travel’s designs for the NLPRIME project are nearing completion. NLPRIME should be deployed so that highlevel sensitives from the broader population can be identified for recruitment.

NL-PRIME revealed

A source just sent these documents my way… it appears that an XM research group in Japan (if I had to guess, it would be IQTech-East) has been working with Willer Travel on a project called NL-PRIME.

Based on their research, it seems NL-PRIME is a hyper-saturated mobile XM environment that can be used to identify ‘extraordinary’ sensitives for future recruitment. The feats these sensitives seem able to perform are remarkable. Read on for the details.

Reservations can be made here.

CANDIDATE 8: Don’t bother asking your questions. Yes, I can access memories with 100% accuracy. Yes some of those memories are not my own. Yes, I am currently visualizing multiple timelines simultaneously in great detail. Yes all my other senses are hyper-aware…

RESEARCHER: … those are not the questions on my list, sir.

CANDIDATE 8: That is the data your questions are designed to acquire. Pass my answers on to your supervisors and they will be satisfied. May I go?

As you had predicted, Major Tsukasa, the high XM dose enabled these Sensitives to do things we previously did not consider possible. During her interview, Candidate 3 noted that one of our researchers was not feeling well and should be sent home. This researcher was in a building 2 km away at the time and had never met Candidate 3 or been in her presence. The enhanced state lasted nearly 11 days.

At this stage we recommend field testing begin. Willer Travel’s designs for the NL-PRIME project are nearing completion. NL-PRIME should be deployed so that high-level sensitives from the broader population can be identified for recruitment.

Akira Tsukasa Spotted near NL-PRIME Test Facility

by PAC

This surveilled image was attached to a recent intel report about Akira Tsukasa. It was taken while the famous researcher was working on a field test for NL-PRIME . My source tells me that the mobile XM testing environment is being prepared for rapid deployment and activation.

Tsukasa has been leading experiments that study Exotic Matter and its effects from a number of different of aspects:

Via NL-Prime, she has been exploring XM’s mind-enhancing and extra-sensory properties.

Based on the research paper that Jahan came upon recently, Tsukasa also seems to be exploring the nature of the Ultimate and how it can be used as a retrieval system for memories and other parts of a person’s pattern.

In addition, some sources suggest that she’s been testing the use of XM as a rejuvenating substance (perhaps similar to how it functions in XM simulacra?). These sources claim that she has been using herself as the subject of these experiments, and has been able to successfully mitigate some of the physical effects of her own aging process.

It’s pretty clear to me that Akira Tsukasa is on her way to being one of the most influential researchers in the world of Ingress. Reports suggest she’ll be on the ground at the Tokyo Aegis Nova Anomaly. I suspect we’ll learn much more about her as her influence begins to spread.

The following is an explanation of ranks, Members who are working and having fun earn ranks on the The Visitors Fifth Column. Listed here are the various ranks available, the abbreviation for that rank, and the insignia used to represent the rank. Ranks are used to give us the feel of an operating Mothership in the 21st Century. They are not to be abused in any way and any crewmember caught doing so can be removed from any position and rank. The Visitors Fifth Column may have changed the names of some ranks to better fit its organization.

These are the official ranks according to Brienne Glyttov, the designer for the Visitor’s uniforms.

The NYPD together with the New York Nightlife Association have developed these guidelines as suggested ways to achieve that goal. They are meant as a general road map for owners and managers, not as a list of laws applicable to all establishments and all situations. We have also included separate sections regarding how to respond to a serious criminal incident and what you should know about counterterrorism threats and preparedness. Use your best judgment while keeping these suggestions in mind and adapting them to your specific establishment. SECURITY 1. As a general guideline, there should be a minimum of one licensed and trained security guard in every premise when 75 or more patrons are present at the same time. For larger premises, there should be one such security guard for every 75 club patrons present. Any full time security supervisor shall be included when counting the total number of security guards employed. Discretion should be used by management to determine the appropriate number of security based on the event or crowd to ensure safety and lawfulness. 2. If the establishment uses the services of a security guard company rather than employing its own security guards, the security guard company must be licensed by the NYS Department of State. 3. Security guards should be trained in techniques to de-escalate potential violent encounters and difficult situations. 4. Establishment policy should mandate that security separate and remove all potentially violent patrons in a manner, consistent with the law, that is designed to prevent a continuation of violent activity inside or outside the club. Establishments must call 911 to report criminal activity, and may call 911 or otherwise notify police for assistance in these circumstances. 2 Similarly, call 911 to report serious medical emergencies such as drug overdoses. 5. It is recommended that for every five (5) security guards there be one (1) security supervisor to ensure a minimum span of control of one (1) security supervisor for every five (5) subordinates. 6. It is recommended that security guards be distinctively and uniformly attired – very easily identified. 7. It is recommended that security guards be spread throughout the establishment and not just at the door. 8. Coat check should include the customer’s ability to check bags. It is recommended that establishments install anti-theft environmental designs such as drawers, shelves and hooks for customers who choose not to check bags. Ensure control and order are maintained in coat check area, especially at closing time. Customers should be encouraged to check coats and bags so as to avoid thefts. 9. Perpetrators should be detained by security through lawful means. Witnesses should be encouraged to wait for the police to arrive in order to assist in the investigation. At a minimum, they should be asked to provide their identifying information so that they may be contacted by the police in the future. They should also be encouraged to make a statement to establishment personnel regarding the incident, if the establishment so requests. Establishments should act as complainants in appropriate cases. 10.Establishments should encourage employee witnesses to go to court and testify when requested, and pay wages to them for their time. 11.Digital video of any unlawful conduct should be identified and provided to the NYPD when requested. 12.Identifying information on ejected and/or arrested patrons should be retained on a “banned list” database. These patrons should not be allowed subsequent re-entry. 13.It is recommended that properly working and maintained digital cameras be mounted in front of the establishment (both inside and outside), at all entry doors and outside the bathroom doors. 14.It is helpful to learn if all of these efforts are working. To that end, hire an independent security consultant to ensure club security and other laws and policies, including laws prohibiting sales to minors, are being adhered to. 3 15.Ensure that levels of lighting inside and outside the establishment are sufficient for observation by security. 16.All those awaiting admission should be placed in a line, not blocking the sidewalk. All individuals on admission lines should be informed that if they are not orderly, they will not be admitted. Individuals who will not be admitted should be encouraged to leave the area. 17.At closing, security is to ensure orderliness when patrons are exiting the establishment. 18.If metal detectors are used, every patron should get mag’ed in accordance with establishment policy. VIP’s, DJ’s, promoters, entourages, etc. should not receive special treatment and should likewise be mag’ed. 19.Establishments should safeguard evidence connected with commission of a crime on the premises and should maintain the integrity of any crime scene. 20.Spot checks of employees should be conducted to ensure compliance with establishment policies and applicable laws and rules, including integrity tests for false ID and underage sales. 21.Management should know and make readily available the telephone number of the local precinct and the name of the commander of the precinct cabaret squad, if applicable. INTOXICATION 22.State law and common sense prohibit a nightlife establishment from serving alcohol to a person who is visibly intoxicated, or permitting someone else to serve the intoxicated person. It is of course in the best interest of everyone involved to prevent the kinds of behavior which are associated with intoxicated patrons, and all employees should be highly aware of the signs of intoxication: Speech slurred, thick, confused, abusive, profane, antagonistic or incoherent Appearance in disarray, clothing stained Balance unsteady, or body swaying, using a wall or furniture as a prop Face pale or flushed Eyes bloodshot, red, or puffy Fumbling or dropping of glass, ID, cash, etc., or misjudging distance Unusual physiological symptoms, e.g., vomiting, excessive hiccupping, losing focus, sleepy or fainting 4 23.Ensure that all employees maintain continual awareness of the level of intoxication of patrons, as well as whether individuals are buying drinks for others who may have in fact been cut off. SEXUAL ASSAULTS 24.Although a sexual assault may not occur within a nightlife establishment itself, management and employees can help to prevent their premises from being exploited by sexual predators, who may seek to take advantage of vulnerable patrons. Alcohol consumption can be a strong contributing factor to the loss of judgment and failure to perceive danger which can lead to a tragedy. 25.In a nightlife environment, certain patrons, primarily young females, are especially vulnerable to potential attackers who may present themselves as friendly, seeking to getting to know them, buying them drinks, or otherwise displaying romantic interest. A common scenario is for an attacker to initiate an interaction in the premises and then persuade or invite the victim to leave with him. Employees should be attuned to behavior that seems overly familiar, aggressive or seductive under the circumstances, especially if the potential victim is visibly intoxicated or seems to be impaired. 26.Establishment personnel should offer to call a vulnerable or impaired person a cab or otherwise watch as patrons leave, to see if they seem to be able to navigate safely. Security personnel at the door or maintaining order outside are well positioned to observe when patrons leave. Note that predators may seek to get victims drunk or drugged, encourage them to get some air, and then pull up in a car or hail a cab to take them away. 27.If establishment personnel sense that something is awry when a patron leaves with a person suspected of being a potential predator, they should make it clear that they have noted the departure, communicating the fact that the potential predator has been seen and the situation noted, for example, commenting on an item of clothing, or asking if they need any help getting a cab. If possible, it would be a good idea to make a note of the circumstances, the descriptions of the parties, or any other information that could become relevant at a later time. 28.Encourage groups to designate one person as a chaperone, perhaps identified by a wristband, who could be served non-alcoholic beverages at a discount for the night. 29.Regarding prevention of assaults within the premises, as recommended in Item 13, maintain digital cameras outside the bathroom doors, and consider employing a restroom attendant. Monitor the cameras throughout the night, and especially after 2 AM. Ensure that storage areas and other 5 restricted areas are kept locked and secured; any closed, darkened area represents a potential danger. 30.Support staff, including porters, barbacks, busboys, and kitchen staff, should also be encouraged to be aware of patron behavior and possible dangers of sexual assault, especially as these employees work in or pass through areas which are dark or restricted. They should be instructed to immediately report any suspicious or problematic behavior to a supervisor or manager. 31.Perhaps most important, management and employees should trust their instincts regarding possible predatory behavior they may observe; if something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. Again, if possible, it would be a good idea to make notes of the observation, for later reference if needed. EMPLOYEES 32.All employees must have a photo ID on file in the location, with a description of his/her position and contact information. Consider using ID scanning not only for patrons (see below) but also for employees, to identify all employees on the premises. 33.Establishments should also have contact information for all individuals contracted to provide operational services such as DJ’s and promoters. 34.There must be a person designated to be in charge of the premises. The name and phone number of both the manager and the person designated to be in charge of the premises, if different, during the hours of operation, must be available to appropriate government agencies. 35.Designate clean-up crews inside and outside the establishment. All flyers, handbills, cups, debris, etc. should be cleaned from in front of the premises throughout the night. 36.Designate specific employees to conduct occupancy counts periodically throughout the night. 37.Managers should identify themselves to responding government agencies. AGE VERIFICATION 38.State law (Alcoholic Beverage Control Law Section 65-b(2)(b)) specifies the types of documents that are acceptable proof of age for the purpose of purchasing alcohol in New York State. They are: a valid driver’s license or non-driver identification card issued by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, the Federal Government, a State Government, Commonwealth, Possession or Territory of the United States or a Provincial Government of 6 Canada; or a valid U.S. passport, or valid passport of any other country; or a valid military ID from the U.S. 39.ID should be checked for every person seeking to enter the establishment who reasonably appears to be less than 21 years of age. There should be no exceptions made to this policy, including for anyone brought into the premises by an employee or promoter. Management should monitor the door and make it clear to promoters that they are not to steer patrons around security in order to evade ID checks. 40.The use of ID scanning machines is strongly recommended. While they do not reject legal ID’s being used by another individual nor are they foolproof in rejecting fake ID’s, they are extremely helpful in recording who is entering the establishment. 41.Some machines are able to: Verify an ID is valid (ABC Law requires government issued ID only) Record notes – identify problem people 42.Retain ID for 14 day minimum – must be turned over or made available to the Police Department on request and in some circumstances may be used in defending a charge of serving a minor. 43.Digital video cameras and ID scanners, when used, should be time stamped so that ID scanning information can be compared to video of patrons entering club. 44.Machines are not to be used for marketing or advertising. PROMOTERS 45.Establishments which contract with promoters may well be held responsible if promoters engage in or encourage irresponsible activity in the premises. Therefore it is incumbent upon management to take adequate precautions when dealing with promoters, who are much less likely to suffer the consequences of illegal conduct than the establishment itself. 46.Establishments should only work with promoters who are professional. Promoters should be required to provide full contact information for themselves and anyone they hire to work in the establishment. If the promoter is insured, the venue should be listed as additionally insured on all relevant policies. 47.Management should require that all promotional materials be approved by the venue prior to being published or released to the public. 7 48.Management should make absolutely clear to promoters what their policies are, especially regarding admission of those under 21 years old, and make clear that promoters are expected to fully adhere to these policies. 49.Management should have representation at the door to ensure that all door policies are adhered to by promoters and their employees. Management should reserve the right to refuse entrance to any guest pursuant to their existing admission policies. 50.All guests of the promotional team must be treated as any other patron, consistent with the establishment’s search and ID policies, without exception, and including the promoters themselves, DJ’s and employees. 51.Management should check the past performance of promoters before considering contracting with them, by inquiring with other venues about what type of crowd they attract, how they operate, how responsive they are to problems or concerns, etc. CLUB POLICIES – SHOULD BE CLEAR AND WELL KNOWN 52.DO NOT ADMIT ANYONE UNDER 21, except that those under 21 may be admitted to establishments when operated primarily as restaurants during those hours in which meals are served. 53.If bottle purchases are allowed, DO NOT ADMIT ANYONE UNDER 21. Establishments must take sufficient steps to ensure that the tables are closely monitored so as to prevent underage drinking or over consumption. 54.An establishment policy handbook should be in the premises at all times and should be distributed to all employees. The handbook should to the degree practicable incorporate the guidelines suggested in this document. The handbook should inform all employees how to handle situations that arise frequently and which often lead to problems, e.g.: illnesses or injuries fights patron refuses search or pat down disorderly patron false ID drug use citizen arrest recovered weapon 8 55.The establishment policy handbook should also include: emergency evacuation plan exit plan – gradual staged exit at closing to ensure orderliness order maintenance outside premises 56.A professional looking sign containing patron code of conduct rules should be displayed inside the establishment. 57.When an establishment has residential neighbors on the same block, post a sign encouraging patrons to be quiet and sensitive to the neighbors. 58.All permits must be kept up to date and readily available if needed. 59.Management is to ensure that club policies are adhered to. 60. If a criminal incident occurs, an incident report listing full details should be generated and maintained for three years. Attached is a suggested form which may be used for this purpose. Also attached is a set of best practices which has been developed for responding to serious criminal incidents. POLICE – COMMUNITY RELATIONS 61.A list of all scheduled events should be sent to the community affairs officer in the local precinct. In the case of a special event, such as a celebrity performance or party, 72 hours’ notice, when possible, should be given to the precinct, and the establishment should ensure that adequate and additional security personnel are employed to meet the specific expected crowd. 62.Each establishment should have a search policy and adhere to it. (This may vary from no one is searched, to all bags are searched, to random searches are conducted, to everyone is searched.) This ensures that upon arrival, the Precinct Commander and the officers will have a basis to know if the occupants have been searched and what, if anything was found. 63.Representatives of establishments are welcome at Precinct Community Council meetings, and should attend as many as possible. 64.The Precinct Commander and establishment owners should meet as necessary in order to discuss with each other operational issues, solutions to common problems, problem locations, etc. 9 RESPONSE TO SERIOUS CRIMINAL INCIDENTS – “THE CRIME SCENE” These best practices are designed to apply to serious criminal incidents, usually assaults that are physical and/or sexual in nature. For these purposes assaults are deemed serious when the victim of the physical assault is either unconscious, or is obviously in need of immediate medical treatment, for a serious or life-threatening injury, such as a stabbing or slashing. This is more serious in nature than a bar fight with minor injuries. An exception to this general rule is sexual assault crimes where the victim may have no visible injuries. Sexual assaults are serious criminal incidents, and as such fall within the purview of these guidelines. Pre-Incident: 1. All establishments should maintain a list of all employees and independent contractors (such as DJ’s, promoters, and other entertainers) who are present on any individual night. Also maintained should be contact information for these employees to aid in contacting them as part of a post-incident investigation. 2. Establishments should request and maintain contact information for a representative of any private group who has a function or event at the establishment. Post-Incident: 1. Call 911 immediately. 2. Establishments should make clear to all managers, employees and private contractors that they are expected to tell the truth to the police investigators. 3. Do not clean up the crime scene. Protect it from any changes. Crime scenes can be protected by temporarily surrounding them with velvet ropes or yellow “caution” tape using chairs, velvet rope stanchions, or even potted plants to support the tape. To this end, inexpensive yellow “Caution Tape” should be kept in the establishment. 4. Nightlife establishment employees should be aware that important physical evidence may not be readily visible or obvious. Incidents involving sexual assaults will rarely have recognizable evidence at the scene of the occurrence. Establishments should therefore “overprotect” the area of the crime by safeguarding an area larger than they initially believe the crime scene to be. 5. Immediately identify and preserve financial transaction information for all parties involved or who are believed to be witnesses. This includes debit and credit transactions. 10 6. Involved parties or witnesses should be detained if possible. There are several techniques to accomplish this, from asking them to stay, to offering them complimentary admission on a subsequent date, to asking for and retaining their ID’s, and giving them to the responding police officers. 7. Establishments should know what parking facilities are commonly used by their patrons and provide this information to police investigators. 8. If the perpetrators or witnesses leave, a description of the vehicle in which they left (with license plate number), the direction and means by which they left, and the identity or description of any people they left with should be provided to the responding police officers. 9. The table or area where the involved parties sat or stood, including their beverage glasses, utensils, and any other evidence should be preserved and left untouched inside the club. This material should be identified to the responding police officers immediately. Employees of nightlife establishments should be cognizant that in certain circumstances, tampering with physical evidence can be a crime. See, for example, Penal Law § 215.35 Tampering with physical evidence; definitions of terms, and Penal Law § 215.40 Tampering with physical evidence, which are provided following item 13. 10. Video of people inside the club during the evening the crime took place should be preserved for the police, even if it appears to have no probative value. Often these videos can be enhanced to reveal important evidence. To increase the usefulness of these images in establishments which are often dark, one area of the club, such as a hallway immediately outside the rest rooms, should have enhanced lighting. This will make the images of people passing through that area more identifiable. It is recommended that properly working and maintained digital cameras be mounted in front of the establishment (both inside and outside), at all entry doors and outside the bathroom doors. These digital videos should be recorded, maintained, and provided to the responding police investigators. 11. ID scanner information should be preserved and made available to the responding police officers. 12. Serious assaults should always be the subject of a uniform incident report being completed by a managerial level employee of the establishment who was present at the time of the incident. This manager need not be a witness to the incident, but is responsible for interviewing the witnesses and completing the report. The report should be maintained by the establishment for a minimum of the three-year statute of limitations for negligence law suits. 13. Obviously, these best practices apply to serious incidents that occur inside the establishments. However, important evidence may exist inside the establishment even if the crime occurs outside the establishment, and therefore there will be circumstances where these best practices apply to incidents that 11 take place outside of the establishment. For example, if the circumstances of an assault are such that the involved parties were in the establishment before the assault, and the assault subsequently took place outside of the establishment, the evidence that the involved parties left behind must be safeguarded. This includes: – financial records of their purchases – video images of involved parties – images of scanned ID’s – glasses and utensils used by the involved parties, which may yield identifying information such as fingerprints and DNA – observations of witnesses which may aid in a subsequent ID of involved parties Relevant Penal Law Sections: Section 215.35 Tampering with physical evidence; definitions of terms. The following definitions are applicable to section 215.40: 1. ”Physical evidence” means any article, object, document, record or other thing of physical substance which is or is about to be produced or used as evidence in an official proceeding. 2. ”Official proceeding” means any action or proceeding conducted by or before a legally constituted judicial, legislative, administrative or other governmental agency or official, in which evidence may properly be received. Section 215.40 Tampering with physical evidence. A person is guilty of tampering with physical evidence when: 1. With intent that it be used or introduced in an official proceeding or a prospective official proceeding, he (a) knowingly makes, devises or prepares false physical evidence, or (b) produces or offers such evidence at such a proceeding knowing it to be false; or 2. Believing that certain physical evidence is about to be produced or used in an official proceeding or a prospective official proceeding, and intending to prevent such production or use, he suppresses it by any act of concealment, alteration or destruction, or by employing force, intimidation or deception against any person. Tampering with physical evidence is a class E felony. 12 COUNTERTERRORISM BEST PRACTICES This section is intended to provide information on counterterrorism planning to nightlife businesses. It is not intended to alarm or frighten, but rather to help New York City’s vibrant nightlife community achieve both safety and hospitality for its customers. Effective counterterrorism measures can only be achieved through cooperation. To achieve the goal of a safe New York City nightlife, operators of nightlife establishments will have to work cooperatively with the police, nightlife industry associations, their landlords, their neighbors, and even their competitors. The following is a starting point for nightlife businesses to create an effective counterterrorism plan. In creating such a plan, nightlife businesses are encouraged to consult their local police precinct, as well as private security and nightlife management consultants. Terrorist Strategy Terrorism is a criminal act designed to manipulate an audience beyond the immediate victims. Terrorists seek to commit acts of violence that draw local, national, and international attention to their cause. Terrorists plan their attacks to obtain the greatest publicity and choose targets that symbolize the ideologies they oppose. Terrorist Goals Terrorists engage in violent behaviors for the following reasons: A. To create fear in people they consider enemies. B. To create recognition for their ideology. C. To provoke a reaction from governments. D. To obtain money and equipment from their sympathizers. Terrorist Target Selection A. Terrorists typically use a very organized program of hostile surveillance to select targets and learn how to best attack them. B. Target selection criteria often include: ability to inflict mass casualties; economic impact; critical infrastructure; political, religious or historical symbolism; vulnerability. C. Terrorists have demonstrated a preference for “soft targets,” those which are not protected by an effective counterterrorism plan. The process of making an entity more resistant to terrorist attacks, and therefore a more undesirable target, is therefore known as “target hardening.” 13 Terrorism and the Nightlife Industry The following are notable examples of terrorist attacks against nightlife establishments: London 2007: On June 29, 2007, in London, two car bombs were discovered and disabled before they could explode. The first device was set near the Tiger Tiger nightclub at around 01:30 am, and the second was nearby, in an area of London popular for its many nightlife establishments. The Tiger Tiger nightclub is the flagship of one of England’s best known nightclub chains. It is 18,000 square feet in size, and contains a restaurant, four large dance floors, and five bars. The first car was reported to the police by an ambulance crew attending a minor incident at the nightclub. The ambulance crew noticed suspicious fumes coming from the parked car. About two hours later, the car containing the second device was towed because it was parked illegally. The staff at the auto pound noticed a strong smell of gasoline emanating from the vehicle and reported it to police. The cars, both late model Mercedes, were found to contain improvised explosive devices made up of gasoline, propane gas, nails, and a remote triggering device. A member of a radical Islamic group was convicted of this attempted attack. London 2004: Police counterterrorism investigators foil a plot to use a bomb to attack the “Ministry of Sound,” the largest nightclub in London, with a capacity of 2,200 patrons. The key to foiling this plot was the alert employees of a self-storage facility where the terrorists had stored 1,300 pounds of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, the main component of what would have been a massive bomb. The employees became suspicious of the terrorists and their cache of fertilizer and contacted the police, who discovered the plot. Five terrorists were convicted and sentenced to life in prison in connection with this plot. Bali 2002: At approximately 11pm on October 12, 2002, a suicide bomber inside Paddy’s Pub nightclub detonated a bomb in his backpack, causing many patrons to flee into the street. Approximately fifteen seconds later, a secondary device, a larger and much more powerful VBIED (vehicle borne improvised explosive device, or car bomb) hidden inside a white van, was detonated in the street in front of Paddy’s Pub. This bomb was designed to kill the patrons who had fled from the first bomb inside the club. 202 people were killed by the blast, and 240 were injured. The VBIED was powerful enough to destroy neighboring buildings and shatter windows blocks away. Members of Jemaah Islamiyah, a violent Islamist group, were convicted of crimes related to the bombings. Terrorists View Nightlife Businesses as Attractive Targets for Attacks Terrorist target selection is often based upon the ability to inflict mass casualties, the symbolism of the target, and the vulnerability of the target. Recently, there seems to be a trend to select “soft targets,” those with less security than ‘hard targets,” such as government or military facilities. 14 Islamic extremists view nightlife establishments as “dens of depravity,” which represent Western decadence and immorality. Patrons of these businesses are viewed as sinful and deserving violent punishment. Characteristics of Terrorist Attacks Terrorist attacks typically involve: • Careful planning. • The smallest number of participants possible. • Extensive “hostile surveillance,” that is, extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering of the potential target by the terrorists. • The use of secondary explosions which are designed to inflict mass casualties and death on fleeing victims of the initial explosion, and on emergency personnel who respond to the initial explosion. Counterterrorism Security Planning for Nightlife Establishments A. Responsibility for counterterrorism security planning should be assigned to one senior managerial employee, usually the same person responsible for other types of security. This individual should have sufficient resources and authority to accomplish this responsibility. B. The establishment should have a counterterrorism security plan. The plan should be simple, clear, and flexible. C. The security plan should include: 1. Details of the security measures to be implemented, including personnel assigned to carry them out, with designated back-up personnel assignments. 2. How to respond to a threat, such as a bomb threat or threat of attack delivered by telephone or in person. 3. How to respond to the discovery of a suspicious device. 4. A search plan. Searches should be conducted daily, before, during and after hours of operation. 5. An evacuation plan. 6. A communications and media strategy, which includes liaison with the police and other emergency services, communication with the media, and inquiries from concerned family members. D. The security plan should include the “SEVEN KEY INSTRUCTIONS,” which are applicable to most incidents: 1. Notify the police immediately. 2. Do not touch the suspicious items. 3. Move EVERYONE away to a safe distance. Remain behind hard cover. 4. Prevent others from approaching the suspicious item. 5. Communicate with staff and patrons in a manner designed not to create alarm. 6. Do not use radios and cellular phones in the immediate vicinity of the suspicious item. 15 7. Ensure that witnesses – whoever found the item or witnessed the incident – remain present to talk to the police. E. All staff should be trained on the counterterrorism security plan so that they understand their responsibilities under the plan, and also have a general understanding of sound counterterrorism practices. Refresher training and training of new employees should be conducted periodically. Constant vigilance is the most important concept to be conveyed to the staff. F. All staff should be trained as to when and how to notify the police and senior management. Management should be notified whenever staff notices anything unusual or suspicious in any way. The police should be notified any time a possible threat exists. Call 911 for emergencies and crimes occurring or about to occur. For example, call 911 if an employee believes the establishment is currently being subject to hostile terrorist surveillance. Call the New York City Terrorism Hot Line at 1-888-NYC-Safe if possible terrorist related activity has occurred in the past. For example, call the hot line if an employee recalls seeing activity in the past that may have been indicative of terrorist hostile surveillance. Call 311 to report non-emergency and quality of life conditions. Physical Security and Counterterrorism A. Access points between the private and public areas of the establishment should be minimized and controlled with an access control system. At the minimum, all such access points should be secured and monitored. B. All patrons and independent contractors (such as promoters, dancers, DJ’s, etc.) should be searched upon entering the establishment. Use of magnetometers and metal detectors should be considered (see Best Practices Item 18). C. The establishment should be searched routinely before, during, and after hours of operation. See below. D. Staff should be instructed to ensure that vehicles discharging or picking up passengers do not stay in place for any longer than is absolutely necessary. E. Anti-shatter glass should be installed in the location wherever practical. Many injuries from explosive devices are caused by shattering glass. Anti-shatter film may be applied to glass already in place. F. Integration of security systems. Alarm systems, CCTV systems, access control systems, lighting systems, and patron identification recording systems should all be integrated to the extent possible, to allow them to work together and maximize their effectiveness. For example, additional exterior lighting on the main entrance of an establishment will make the CCTV coverage of that entrance much more effective. Similarly, CCTV coverage of the alarm trigger points in the security system will allow for remote assessment of alarm conditions. G. Establishment maintenance and housekeeping. Good maintenance and housekeeping practices keep an establishment attractive to patrons and also reduces the opportunity for the hiding of suspicious devices. Maintenance staff should be included in counterterrorism planning and training. Their vigilance is important to detect suspicious devices and events, such as disabled access control systems. 16 Use of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in Counterterrorism Efforts A. CCTV systems are very high tech and complicated. They should be professionally installed and maintained, and the employees responsible for their use and maintenance should be appropriately trained by professionals. B. CCTV images should be constantly monitored and recorded. Recordings should be kept for a minimum of 30 days. The quality of the recordings should be regularly checked, ensuring that the images are clear and that the date and time stamps are accurate. C. Sufficient staff should be trained on the use of the CCTV system to allow it to be continually monitored during an incident. D. There should be a system in place to immediately turn necessary recordings over to the police for use in an investigation or as evidence. E. Lighting should be appropriate to ensure good image quality of the CCTV system. F. Older analog CCTV systems use video tape to record images. These tapes degrade quickly and should be reused no more than 12 times. Searching Establishments as Part of a Counterterrorism Security Plan A. Search plans should be created in advance and should be memorialized onto a checklist. The checklist should be completed each time the establishment is searched. Searches should be conducted daily, before, during and after hours of operations. Searches can be incorporated as part of the routine cleaning and maintenance of the establishment. B. The search should also be performed when accompanying the police in response to a specific threat against an establishment, such as a telephone bomb threat. In these cases it is much more effective to have the responding police officers accompanied by employees who routinely search the establishment. It will be easier for these employees to recognize out of place, unusual, or suspicious items than it would be for police officers who may have never seen the establishment before. Door Supervisors Counterterrorism plans should include the following instructions for door supervisors: A. Be alert to what is going on outside of the establishment as well as at the door. B. Understand and be able to identify hostile surveillance. See below. C. Understand and be able to identify indications of suicide bombers and VBIEDs. See below. D. Ensure that patrons and employees of the establishment are searched, their ID scanned, and that they are checked with a metal detecting magnetometer, consistent with the security and counterterrorism plan of the establishment. 17 E. Pay particular attention to fraudulent and forged identification documents. People using apparently forged ID documents who do not appear to be underage are very suspicious, and should be immediately brought to the attention of the police. F. Management should be aware that New York State law requires that all security personnel, including door supervisors, be licensed. Evacuation Plan A. All establishments should have a written evacuation plan. All employees should be trained on the plan, understand their specific responsibilities under the plan, and should have a general understanding of the workings of the plan. B. The evacuation plan must include clear communication to staff and patrons. All routes, exit plans and assembly areas must be well defined. Staff members should be trained to act as marshals (leaders/coordinators) and contacts once the evacuation assembly area is reached. The plan should include at least two alternative evacuation assembly areas. C. In case of an evacuation of the establishment, the police MUST be notified of the reason for the evacuation, and the evacuation route and the assembly area being used. D. Neighboring establishments should be consulted when designing an evacuation plan to ensure that both establishments are not planning on using the same assembly areas. E. Small maps of various evacuation routes can be printed on the reverse of employee’s ID cards, and/or access control cards. F. When designing evacuation plans, it should be remembered that secondary explosives are used by terrorists to inflict casualties on people fleeing an initial attack. The evacuation plan should therefore include alternate assembly areas. This will make the use of a secondary device at the assembly area more difficult for the terrorists. Communications A. Part of an effective counterterrorism plan is to ensure an effective communications strategy is in place. B. The communications strategy must be multilayered. It is important to maintain ongoing communication on counterterrorism issues with groups such as employees and vendors who are routinely present in your establishment. It is also important to have a plan for communication with police, neighboring premises, and possibly the media. C. The communications plan must include emergency communications during an incident. Patrons, staff, police, and neighboring premises will all have to be communicated with in this situation. D. Cellular telephones may not be functioning during an emergency. Larger establishments should consider the use of hand held radios for emergency communications. All establishments should consider the installation 18 of a hard-wired (land-line) pulse dial analog telephone which will function during power failures. Hostile Surveillance A. Terrorists use hostile surveillance as part of the target selection process and to learn as much as possible about their targets before an attack. These actions can occur weeks to years before a terrorist attack. B. Hostile surveillance is usually conducted in a covert manner, with the terrorists conducting the surveillance pretending to be tourists, students, or customers. It is often characterized by activities such as photography, videography, sketching or drawing, and note taking. Often the person or persons conducting the hostile surveillance will take particular interest in the outside of a potential target, paying particular attention to the doors, alarm systems, CCTV system, parking lots, security personnel and security plans. Sometimes these individuals may engage employees and ask questions about the establishment’s operations and its security plans. C. Another indicator of potential hostile surveillance may include an increase in bomb threats and unattended packages. These may be used as an opportunity for the terrorists to observe police and security responses to these incidents. D. Door Supervisors and staff should also be aware of new characters on the streetscape surrounding the establishment. These could include vendors, panhandlers, and loiterers. E. All of the activities mentioned above should be reported to management, who should make a determination whether the incident is serious enough to bring to the attention of the police. Identification of Suicide Bombers A. Counterterrorism security plans should include training for all staff in the detection of possible suicide bombers. There are many factors which may create suspicion of this activity: inappropriate clothing for the season, time, place or circumstance; protrusions from the clothing; concealment of the hands; visible wires or tape; two or more people communicating and trying not to be observed; a suspect whose presence or behavior is inconsistent with the time or place; individuals who are obviously disguised; individuals with obvious signs of extreme stress or nervousness, such as bulging veins in the neck, profuse sweating, shaking hands, touching the face continuously, involuntary motions, apathy, distant stare or unfocused gazing, feeling the body continuously; and individuals whose speech includes stuttering, mumbling or chanting, or are hesitant or unresponsive. B. Suspicious luggage or packages on an individual should also be noted. Indicia include: individuals holding luggage which is incompatible with the surroundings; holding a bag very close to the body or not releasing it when appropriate; weight of bag is obviously great; identical bags carried by several individuals; and bags with obvious irregularities. 19 C. In all situations, part of the counterterrorism security plan should be to encourage all security and establishment staff to trust their gut feelings. If they feel suspicious or uneasy about an individual or group of people they should bring that suspicion to the attention of a security supervisor with responsibility for counterterrorism security. D. Terrorists are not confined to one ethnic or racial group. There have been documented terrorist attacks by individuals of a wide variety of backgrounds. It is therefore important to stress in counterterrorism planning the need to be vigilant and observe all people, and not to exclude individuals from suspicion because of their appearance. Personnel should be mindful of the increased participation of females in terrorist activity. Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs) A. Terrorists have often employed explosive devices hidden inside cars or other vehicles. B. The use of bollards or other physical barriers to vehicles may be considered, but their use must be consistent with local traffic and other City regulations and permit requirements. C. Counterterrorism training should stress to all staff that all vehicles are to be scrutinized for irregular operation or suspicious activity, including luxury vehicles, limousines, taxicabs, and vehicles purportedly carrying VIPs. D. Suspicious activity or irregular or unusual operation by any vehicle should be reported to the police. Recommendations 1. Learn Stay informed of world and local events, and any ongoing threats. The NYPD SHIELD web site is a good source of current and reliable counterterrorism information. 2. Communicate and Cooperate Maintain good lines of communication with the police, industry associations, your landlord, your neighbors, and even your competition. It is in all of our interests to ensure that the nightlife industry continues to provide a safe and fun environment for its customers. Terrorism is a societal problem which no single entity can address alone. To have effective counterterrorism planning, we must all work together, and communicate effectively. 3. Plan Every business should have a counterterrorism plan. The execution of this plan should be the responsibility of a senior, management level employee. The plan should be written, with specific assignments for staff members. The plan should include back-up assignments to account for staff absenteeism, days 20 off, and terminations. The plan should also include initial training and periodic retraining and drills. 4. Be Vigilant The culture of your organization must be changed to stress vigilance on counterterrorism and safety issues. Cultural change in organizations starts at the top, with ownership and senior management. All people involved in your organization must understand the focus that is to be placed on looking for suspicious activities and reporting them. Your counterterrorism plan must give specific directions as to when and how to notify the police and establishment management. 5. Become a Hard Target The goal of a successful counterterrorism plan is to make your establishment a “hard target,” one that is not perceived by terrorists as desirable to attack. Many factors lead to becoming a hard target, including: increased security, regular searches, counterterrorism drills with staff, visible CCTV cameras, counterterrorism planning, training of staff, and a culture of vigilance. Attached to this booklet are four useful documents: 1. NYPD SHIELD Bomb Threat Checklist, which is useful when a bomb threat is received over the telephone. 2. NYPD SHIELD Guidelines for Suspicious Mail or Packages. 3. NYPD SHIELD Criminal Description Form, which is useful whenever a description of any person needs to be recorded. 4. NYPD “If you see something, say something” poster. 21 BOMB THREAT CHECKLIST CALL 911 Remain calm and try to keep caller on the line.
