Can someone elucidate what ”begin to activate” means?

Maybe.. it cant be removed.. or begin counting the scores?

+Brent Hollett I always find the references to #CalvinBall  funny as they have said nothing less then this would be the case! Not enough people read ”Choose your own adventure” books as kids! Not knowing what will happen is half the fun!

Rene Aavik

+Phillip Malone I think the reference to CalvinBall was justified when the 3 artifacts were moved to ENL target by ”hand of god”, but other than that I agree with you – this is how this type of RPG-s are supposed to work.

+Phillip Malone Actually, a game without rules, where real money is being spent to achieve the goals they set forth, only to have those goals changed, is the definition of a painful #Calvinball .

Choose your own Adventure books are a very different case as you aren’t told the supposed ending before you start.  They’re a story, not a game.  There are no rules because there don’t need to be.  There are no win conditions because the ending is a surprise.

”Did we win?” ”Damned if I know”should not be a common occurrence.

+Rene Aavik I’m always amused by the blinkers for people.

The Resistance act like there’s a massive bias, and that Niantic has never done anything nice for the Resistance.

The first time I heard the Calvinball reference it was when Brandon Badger told everyone ”The shards will now lock in place” during #13Mangus .  Then the Enlightened moved 5 shards to Cupid’s span, to find Badger amend his statement to ”…. soon”.  Nine hours of battle later, we finally got word ”Ok now they’re really locked”.

Another one is where the rule was always ”You must cover the portals in the cluster with a field.”  Then in Amsterdam a field that did that was disallowed, because it didn’t cover the yellow line.  +Ingress added a statement buried down in the bowels of a long thread saying ”it has to be the yellow line”.  Then in Cincinatti, when most of us had missed the ‘adjusted ruling’, the same thing happened and they allowed the field because it covered all portals.  Resistance kicked up a stink, and the field was disallowed.  Then the rule officially changed to ”has to cover the portals” and they stopped giving us yellow lines.

#Calvinbal  refers to being told the rule is one thing, only for that rule to be applied differently after the contest is over.

So…. The real question remains…. This means they can be moved off the target portals?

+Rene Aavik +Brent Hollett A) As Brian Rose said on Before the Scanner, the 3 artifact situation was a no win situation. If nothing was done, it would have been as bad as something. They talked it out and decide what they felt was the best situation.

b) As you say, CalvinBall is changing the rules, they aren’t changing the rules on this occasion, they are change the outcome, depending on the winner of the ”game”. This seems very definition of CYOA or Role Playing books.

c) The time they most changed the rules on the fly was the first shard/artifact ”game” and if I am not mistaken, technically it was still in beta and situations they hadn’t planned for (maybe/probably short sightedly) meant they felt they had to act to keep the game fun. If you look at the 20 pages of rules on this version, they have done a fairly good job of learning from their mistake and have just about covered every possible outcome! Even the 3 shard thing is covered by ”we reserve the right to act on things” type point.

There are not money on the line in Calvinball, and the rules are made up as they go a long. A game like what you describes, with money in the line and the outcome depending on bad referee calls is called soccer.

Calvinball was a fair moniker for the first shard game where they basically made up the rules as they went. Since then it has been more like soccer, rules posted in advance, plenty of questionable referee calls. With the referee always on the side of the other team, and the fans being outraged.

At least so far we have avoided massive riots after the anomalies, so we have that going for us over the hooligans.

So now that we agree that the shard game had more in common with soccer than with Calvinball, will you stop posting that stupid hashmark in every rule based thread?

+Per Abrahamsen  #calvinball  is also about changing the rules when one is about to win to keep the game going, like in ”you have to get 500 mio MU to achieve X” – ”there, we did it” – ”but now there is a twist and you have to get 1 billion MU for X”

Maybe the currently captured artifacts explode in a dance of light and re-scatter all over the world and have to be recaptured again.  And we’re given 72 hours to do it.
