Ranks

The following is an explanation of ranks, Members who are working and having fun earn ranks on the The Visitors Fifth Column. Listed here are the various ranks available, the abbreviation for that rank, and the insignia used to represent the rank. Ranks are used to give us the feel of an operating Mothership in the 21st Century. They are not to be abused in any way and any crewmember caught doing so can be removed from any position and rank. The Visitors Fifth Column may have changed the names of some ranks to better fit its organization.

These are the official ranks according to Brienne Glyttov, the designer for the Visitor’s uniforms.

Details before or after Earth: Freddie hatched on Earth in Sweden. Freddie spent a year on Sirius IV discovering his roots. He was very interested in the Ministry of Justice. His parents on Sirius IV were killed by Kzzizz soldiers and he was sent to live with his Wontu Kal-Jel.Crewman: He joined the Sirian Fleet at the age of 15 and was stationed on Mother Ship 22, in the Transport Department. After 18 month he requested to be transfered to the Security Department, but due lack of experience he was not successful. 6 month later, he applied again – he was successful.

Shock Trooper: Through his actions within the fleet, he seems to catch his superiors attention. He never refused to follow his orders though he sometimes felt that even if he was just following orders, he sometimes thought that some orders were sometimes inaccurate. The Supreme Leader was putting forth a task force to take control of a planet in the SOL system. Seemed the leader was very intent on getting this planet. Some members of the I.G.C. were sent to Monercerous, A huge staging area of 50 Mother Ships. Wakri was not sent to Monercerous till after the fleet had departed for Earth.

Security Guard: 2 weeks after his promotion he was contacted by a fellow crewmember. Little did he know that this man was a Fifth Columnist. Frederik was often terrified by all this unnecessary killing. He felt that if the enemy gave up so would this be treated as a prisoner of war, not being tortured for hours, days and even weeks and then just executed. This crewmember also had the same ideas. After 3 months of contact, though with care and in the most carefull way possible, he joined The Fifth Column.

But he was ordered never to take any covert actions without orders from the leaders of the Fifth Column. He agreed to this.

Chief Centurion: When the fleet arrived to Earth, Wakri decided to become an enlisted officer. To become this, he was required to take some Field Academy Studies ( F.A.S. ). Of course, he did just that and was awarded the rank of Chief Centurion.

Jurisprudence Officer: Wakri took some classes in Sirian Law, but after 1 year he found this job boring and decided to finally become an officer. Thanks to his many Field Academy Studies he was promoted to the rank of Ensign.

Ensign:

Additional details: Freddie is currently an acting Ensign at the Hangar Bay. He try’s not to kill the resistance fighters but its not easy. He has 100 troopers under his command. He is currently based at the Sweden Mothership.

Richard Attenborough (John Hammond) Has Passed Away

JP-JohnHammond

On August 24th, the incredibly talented Richard Attenborough passed away at 90 years old. Richard starred in numerous films in his career, and even directed some; winning Academy Awards. But at TresCom we all knew him best as John Hammond from the Jurassic Park films. He ended up reprising his role for Trespasser, recording over half an hour of dialogue for the game from a script by Austin Grossman. Anyone who has played Trespasser will remember his dialogue very well, popping up at precise moments to give players wonderful bits of backstory and even a hint or two. He also effortlessly made us feel for the character and understand him in a way the films never could. He truly made the experience feel authentic and enjoyable.

My site, Jurassic Time, which hosts an audiobook-like program of his Trespasser dialogue, has dedicated a new page to Richard Attenborough. It sheds some light on who he was, and how he will always be remembered. It includes some personal thoughts of my own. Keep his “lost” performance alive by spreading Jurassic Time with others.

Everyone here at TresCom are saddened by this loss. But he shall never be forgotten by any of us.

New fan patch – TresCE

Lee Arbuco, a new member on the forums, has been working on a new patch for Trespasser which adds in DirectX 9, OpenAL, improved compatibility on newer versions of Windows, increased stability, dinosaur activities that were removed from the retail game, and a whole lot of new and improved functions… the most beautiful change in my opinion is the water refraction. Here’s an example image of what the improved graphics look like:

003

Users also note a doubling of FPS, with levels that retail Trespasser had severe stuttering issue now running smooth and crash free.

Current progress is focusing on adding support for levels using ActionTypes created by BigRed in the ATX patch.

Satellite Image of Jurassic World Six Flags Set Found!

Jurassic World is the new Jurassic Park movie coming out next year, but so far TresCom has been rather silent on the whole thing, aside from the contents of the thread on the forums. Well, today I have something to share that I found myself and shared with a few other sites already, and those sites have already broken the news, but felt to share it on TresCom for those who want to see it here. I will warn you, what I found contains SPOILERS but will be an absolute treasure for recreating Jurassic World in Trespasser in the future, hence its relevance here. It’s the perfect reference image, the kind of thing you’ll only think you’ll see in dreams.

After going on a whim to see if one of the major satellite imagery companies managed to snag a shot of the set of Jurassic World on the parking lot of the abandoned Six Flags, New Orleans, I managed to stumble upon an image of the set from May 26, 2014 showing the set pretty much completed.

The image is hosted by TerraServer at this address: Spoiler-Image 1 Spoiler warning, though, as some features WILL spoil scenes from the movie.

We really hope that we can lay our own hands on this baby, soon! In the meanwhile: who’s up for the challenge of finding the corresponding locations from the screenshots? Post your picture in the comments below.

Cracked.com takes on Trespasser

Poor Trespasser get’s hardly any love from the authors of cracked.com, who recently took it upon themselves to point out hilarious attempts at video game realism. As Cracked, one of our favorite time-wasters on the web, puts it:

Trespasser is a shooting game, but without cross hairs to help you aim and interact with the world, because even though those are staples of the genre, they’re just so silly and unrealistic. Instead, in what can only be described as the spiritual predecessor to QWOP, the game forces you to press several keys simultaneously in order to control the position and rotation of your arm and wris

Oh cracked, how can you stab us in the back like this… Either way: undeserving or rightfully on the list – let us know what you think! :)

Crichton’s Third ‘Jurassic Park’ Novel Discovered, ‘Jurassic World’ Canceled For Adaptation

In a surprise discovery, it has been revealed that Michael Crichton wrote a third, untitled, ‘Jurassic Park’ novel that was buried within his unpublished files and documents. Harper Collins, the publishers of his previous posthumous work ‘Pirate Latitudes’ and ‘Micro’, are currently doing final edits on the material to release the third novel by this fall.

“It is an unexpected treasure that words cannot describe,” a representative from Harper Collins said. “The files were unmarked, which was why we hadn’t discovered it until now. It is a breathtaking story that is probably one of the best Crichton had ever written. The way he continued the story is even more fresh than what he did for the other sequel, ‘The Lost World’. At the same time, it is the ultimate fan service.” Harper Collins was weary to share any more details at this time.

There is some bad news, however. Universal Studios released a statement in conjunction with Harper Collins that the next installment in the film series, ‘Jurassic World’, has been canceled in light of this discovery. Frank Marshall had some words for fans of the beloved film franchise.

“Due to the amazing discovery of a third ‘Jurassic’ novel from Crichton, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all production on ‘Jurassic World’ in order to make a faithful adaptation of this new material. The story is truly amazing, and better than anything we have ever come up with. Making our current production would contradict elements in the novel, making an adaptation of it unlikely to ever happen. We want to respect Crichton’s legacy this time, so we feel that putting in the extra time to go back square one will be the best choice. We are sorry to the fans and those involved in this current production for yet another delay again. But trust me when I say that the wait will be worth it. This new novel is incredible,” said Marshall.

There are bound to be mixed emotions with this news. Fans of the novels will be rejoicing, while fans of the films will probably throw their hands up in the air and no longer care what becomes of their favorite franchise ever again. The big question is: what plot does this new novel have that is so good to make an entire film production come to a halt to adapt it instead?

Rank insignia of the Galactic Empire refers to badges of military rank which were used by officers of the Imperial Military. All officers in the Service wore one or another of these insignia.

Officer ranks

In 0 BBY, Imperial officers of the Galactic Empire wore insignia consisting of a confusing collection of multi-colored rank squares on the left breast of the officer’s uniform with a combination of several metal cylinders to either side of the rank badge. By the next few years, the rank squares had become a much simpler collection of red and blue squares with the code cylinders still in use.

In the Galactic Civil War, most Imperial officers were verbally addressed as ”Commander” with the exception of Admirals, such as Admiral Kendal Ozzel and Piett who were addressed as ”Admiral”. It should be noted that ”commander” is an acceptable form of address for captains, majors, colonels, or anyone of any rank who commands a military unit. Grand Moff Tarkin was referred to as ”Governor”. With such generic terms, the Star Wars films give little hint to a system of ranks and insignia. Over the years, however, the Expanded Universe has established a system of ranks and insignia which matches closely to the characters and the ranks and authority which they most likely held.

Enlisted ranks

Imperial enlisted personnel have never been shown to have any type of insignia, but do have various types of uniforms which could indicate seniority among the enlisted rank structure. The uniforms appear to range from Soldiers and Technicians, to Sergeants and Naval NCOs, as well as Warrant Officers and Command Sergeants. Each of these groups is shown in the feature films to have various types of uniforms but never have been shown wearing any type of identifying insignia.

Stormtroopers

Stormtroopers apparently use the same rank system as the Imperial Army, but rarely wear any type of outward insignia. It is mentioned that Stormtroopers most likely have an identification scanner, built into their helmets, which can determine the rank and seniority of other stormtroopers. This does not explain, however, the colored shoulder pads used by Stormtroopers on Tatooine. Also, in the Battle of Hoth, a stormtrooper is seen wearing the insignia of an Army Captain on his armor. It is assumed that such insignia display is for the benefit of non-stormtrooper personnel.

In the higher ranks of the Stormtroopers, it can be reasonably assumed that the senior Stormtrooper officers do not wear the Battle Armor on a regular basis, thus a different uniform, for the more casual ”office” setting, would most likely be worn. This explains a number of Imperial officers, seen in the feature films directing groups of Stormtroopers, who appear to be wearing solid black uniforms with rank badges. Such personnel are most likely Stormtrooper commanders whose daily duties do not necessitate the regular wearing of battle armor.

Starfighter Corps

The Imperial pilots of the Starfighter Corps are a subject of great debate. One school of thought is that such personnel are members of the Imperial Navy while another possibility exists that the starfighters comprise an entire separate branch of service. Several different literature sources have provided a feasible rank structure for the Starfighter Corps, with indications that Starfighter pilots are Imperial officers with ranks similar to the Army and Navy combined. No starfighter pilot has ever been seen wearing rank insignia but this may have been since the pilots were only seen in flight suits. It is plausible that a separate duty uniform exists, upon which rank insignia may be displayed.

A conjectural rank system for the Imperial Starfighter Corps is as follows

  • High Marshal (High Admiral)
  • Force Marshal (Fleet Admiral)
  • Chief Marshal (Admiral)
  • Marshall (Vice Admiral)
  • Vice Marshal (Rear Admiral)
  • Flight Commodore (Commodore)
  • Group Captain (Captain)
  • Wing Commander (Commander)
  • Squadron Leader (Lieutenant Commander)
  • Flight Lieutenant (Lieutenant)
  • Flying Officer (Sub-Lieutenant)
  • Pilot Officer (Ensign)
  • Flight Cadet (Midshipman)

Corresponding Imperial Navy rank listed as comparison

Imperial Security Bureau

Members of the Imperial Security Bureau, or the ”ISB”, have only been seen for a brief period of time, aboard the Death Star. A white uniformed ISB Colonel, Wullf Yularen, was in the Death Star conference room along with two ISB NCOs walking past the Death Star main elevator area. In both cases, the ISB personnel were shown to be wearing white uniforms with rank insignia corresponding to Imperial Army and Navy personnel. It is possible that the ISB uses the same insignia, with different rank titles, or that the ISB ranks are identical to those of the Imperial Army.

The insignia scheme devised in A New Hope created an interesting ambiguity in that a review of the film shows some Imperial characters who have apparently the same rank and position, yet display different versions of insignia. This problem recurs in the Star Wars Expanded Universe in that Imperial officers of the same rank wear different badges of office.

The possibility exists that such officers serve in different branches of the service or that the difference in insignia is a means to display seniority or some other badge of distinction. This has never been determined exactly, however, leaving the viewing audience to speculate.

The chart displayed to the right indicates alternate versions of Imperial insignia, when applying to the Version One method seen in A New Hope.

Additional info

In the film Return of the Jedi, a wardrobe problem undiscovered until midway through production resulted in all Imperial characters wearing the same insignia, being that of an Imperial Navy Commander. Thus, the Imperial insignia in Return of the Jedi are often ignored.

The rank of Grand Admiral was first mentioned in the Timothy Zahn novels and is considered the senior most rank of the entire Imperial Service. Grand Admirals, and their Imperial Army counterparts Grand Generals are authorized to wear white uniforms with gold shoulder boards, in addition to the standard badge of rank.

The Empire Strikes Back demonstrated that the Imperial Navy and Army, while using the same rank badges, differentiate between the two services by the spacing of the colored squares on the badge itself. Imperial Army officers use rank badges with thin rank squares on a grey metal frame, while Navy officers display flush rank squares with no spacing in-between. This method of separating the two services apparently did not apply to the rank insignia of A New Hope, since all Imperial personnel, both Army and Navy, appeared to wear the same style of rank badge.

The LucasArts Flight Simulator game Star Wars: TIE Fighter provides a much simpler version of Starfighter Ranks as listed below.

  • Grand Admiral
  • Admiral
  • Vice Admiral
  • General
  • Colonel
  • Major

  • Flight Cadet

Given that the flight simulator ranks appear overly simplified and combine Navy and Army titles indiscriminately, most Star Wars sources consider the TIE Fighter ranks to be contradictory and this rank system is generally ignored.

Insignia sources

The information displayed in this article indicates one possible sequence of insignia order based on several different Star Wars literature sources, conjectural information, and information seen in the feature films and other live entertainment productions.

Neither George Lucas or LucasArts has ever published an established insignia guide for either the Galactic Empire or the Rebel Alliance. In the case of the Empire, however, A New Hope seemed to establish a basic system that the more squares and code cylinders a character wore, the more important of a position they held. This idea carried over into The Empire Strikes Back, however in that film the higher ranking characters wore more rank squares but fewer code cylinders.

With the information provided in the feature films somewhat limited, the Expanded Universe has been left with the task of creating a rank and insignia system which holds to the information of the feature films and the additional information put forth in Star Wars literature and other film and televison productions. The following sources, therefore, were used in preparing this article.

After the end of World War II in Asia following the surrender of Japan, the Imperial Japanese Army and Imperial Japanese Navy were dissolved by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers during the occupation of Japan. The symbols below represent the ranks of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force which have, since 1952, replaced the imperial military. The 1938–1945 Japanese military and naval ranks were phased out after World War II. The self-defense force breaks away from the Sino-centric tradition of non-branch-specified ranks, each SDF rank with respect to each service carries a distinct Japanese title, although equivalent titles in different branches are still similar, differing only in the use of the morphemes riku (ground) for the army ranks, kai (sea) for the naval ranks, and kuu (air) for the aviation ranks.

The pentagramic stars on some insignia represent cherry blossoms. Because Japanese soldiers take an oath to die to protect the lives and wealth of Japanese citizens, they have been compared to delicate cherry blossoms that break easily.
